Though I too am pretty new to Succession games, I will attempt to answer this....

First of all, you are right, they are very similar.

"Succession games" started as a number of players agreeing to play a game in "succession" (or as you say, they "take turns and give their savegame to the next ruler") usually with the players agreeing beforehand to some rule restrictions, or special win conditions. Basically the players who played in the first round of the game (at 10-20 turns per player) continued playing in approximetely the same sequence until the game is complete (and seldom do players join in a game in progress).

One of the main problems with this type of game is the decreasing number of players means that the same players are playing in the various games being played at one time, therefore at any one time a player could be up in multiple games and hold them all up until they play, or if they are unable to play for an extended period, all games are on hold until they return (or to use the Lazy Days of Summer Game as an example, various players could drop out, leaving the remaining group playing it out very small.....4 players IIRC).

Problems of this type led to the "free for all"....

The fundamental difference in the "free for all" format is that the players turn order is not fixed, and the players who play in the first round don't necessarily play again. Similarly a player who has not played in the early rounds can easily join in late.

What has been the early format in the free for all games so far is that you cannot play again if you are in the most recent 4 players to play. Aside from that restriction, any player can play at any time. In this manner the game can be picked up by anyone (who has not played in the last four) and the game doesn't get held up as often as a regular succession game.

Hopefully this answers your question!

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

A standard succession game has a roster of players (usually around 8) who take turns, maintaining the same order of play.

A free-for-all succession allows anyone to play, in any order. The only restriction is that the 4 most recent players are ineligible.

The idea behind free-for-all is to keep the games moving forward and allow involvement from players who were offline when the roster was set. This accommodates RL limits to participation that have stymied several of our long-term games.
(Edit: oops, I see that Sparrowhawk beat me to it. )

I'm going to have to start collecting all these quotes.

And I guess I could join a succession game as well. I hardly play any Civ at all anymore, but if I waste my time surfing 'poly I could just as well waste it on something more fun like playing Civ2.

Yes, considering the most recent post in a relatively high-up thread on the first page is from nearly a month ago.

Suffering from ads?

Then of course there is encroachment of RL. I'll be busy with family for a week, then available for a week, then away for a week.

When it started to slow down a couple of months ago, I opened one of my 30+ yet to play computer games.

Unfortunately, it was good enough to be a serious distractor.

Probably the worst offender Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Well forum I am probably the worst offender of participating then leaving games.

The last 12 months have been most stressful for me and for a large part of it I have been stuck in some of the most out of the way countries on this continent you can imagine.

My golf swing has gone to hell, and when I am home all I wish to see is my family. However, due to a dramatic career and life change I am now back in the world of the living. All I need to do now is buy another copy of MGE and get back into the swing of things (both from a civ and golf perspective).

With that I do beg your sufferance.

Cheers, Ant

It's good to see all the old hands dropping by!!

Could I interest anyone in playing a round in the current free-for-all?? Pick up the save, post that you are playing, have great fun for 10 turns, and feel free to play again or not at a later time--no ongoing obligation to finish the game.

atomant - can't you just get regular Civ2 and then download the CFC patch to MGE? If you can't get Civ2 there then there are loads on the second-hand websites here in NZ that I'd be happy to get sent to you. I got MGE recently for $10NZ.

Situation solved, order, via third party, on the way. Strategy games apparently have not taken off here so getting them is a problem...

Still my folks are coming t visit in November and I have to be in OZ for Jan for a wedding (sisters). First time home is over three years, should be amusing.

As soon as the stuff arrives, I will be back in action.
