Apologies in advance, this turn will take me a while to play. I can't say why, per ICR rules, but it will. I will try to keep it to only 2 or 3 days, possibly less, but ... it will be a one-turn delay, in any event.

We note the unmistakable signs of the coming demise of the Japanese on the various charts and graphs we are able to access. We lament the sorry state of the world that the nations on the far side of our world must fight each other.

We of the pacifistic civilization of America would really prefer if no-one fought each other and that you all disarmed yourselves. If it is required, we can send over a group of hippies to exchange flowers for your spears, bows, swords, hammers, axes, etc. We'd also like to start a resolution in the inter-tribal congress condemning the use of force in general.. it's just wrong, people.

Finally, completely conquering the Japanese would violate the endangered civilization inter-tribal provision. While we understand that such provisions are technically non-binding and ultimately meaningless, violating them just wouldn't be fair and we're confident that should prevent you from following through with the final conquest of the Japanese.

Remember, violence never solved anything. We are deeply concerned that your actions in Japan will only cause an escalation to the conflict. We recommend you cease this and begin a collaborative discussion with the Japanese to "work out your issues" instead.

Sadly, the Japanese desired greatly to work our differences out, but the Byzantine answer was simply that nothing but the destruction of our city, or the voluntary handover, would suffice. We prefer to not abandon our citizens to our enemies, so this was not a viable solution.

We have now entered a truce; but the Byzantine desire to limit our growth to a small portion of the map will ultimately prove painful for one or the other of us. Although we are weak now, we do not doubt that the Japanese will rise again ...

That was the opinion of the Japanese. Unfortunately the Byzantines decided the "huge" world was not big enough for their likings with a fourth player ...

The problem is more to do with the layout of the land, and the arrangement of the resources, although it is still a small size map.

If you want, I can send my latest save to you.

Methinks Krill just got a good start position, Rommel. The rest of us (at least jshelr and I) obviously don't agree

The map IS enormous. That said, I agree that it looks like krill got a much better starting area for early food production than the rest of us.

Both are true.
