'Frasier' wasn't camp all the time, and even when it was camp, the irony of two fictional straight men being portrayed in such a camp way was funny. Add in Daphne's bizarre mutating Manchester accent (and the fact that the actor playing Frasier's father was born in Manchester) her brother's absurd 'Mockney' transatlantic accent, the non-appearance of Maris, Ros Doyle's vigorous libido and an out gay actor playing the obnoxiously heterosexual Bulldog, and you have ironies galore and the potential for a great deal of extremely funny situations, and more to the point, the escalating disaster farce/comedy that 'Frasier' did so well- I mention only the restaurant episode, 'Les Freres Heureux' as a case in point.

A wonderful smart comedy and one of the best of all time! The contrast between Frasier/Niles and their father was always hilarious. That 'Duke and the Dutchess' quip in the finale was utterly side-splitting and so apt for John Mahoney's character.

And rarely 'camp'.

So go eat a moose burger in maple syrup.

Uncle Sparky- 'Fawlty Towers' also did farce successfully- although it wasn't North American.

Well, that was the point (er... non-point) of Seinfeld which millions (including myself) loved. It was a show about nothing and didn't pretend to be anything. It's my favorite series of all time. Followed closely by Frasier, though.

And it was the point whioch caused me (and millions of others) not to enjoy it.

I don't care for Woody Allen's humour either, but I usually enjoy New York Jewish humour, and Yiddish/Jewish humour in general. Chacun a son ragout....

Ah, but that 'point' was enough to make it a ratings God, and that was all that counted. Yes, there are many who hate that fact of the show, but a majority did love it enough to have TV Guide rate it as their #1 sitcom of all time.

But it depends, like most things, on what your tastes are. Even those that didn't really like it could at least admit it was better than Friends (ok, not saying much) .

I guess my point is that the non-point of the show may not be a negative, though it depends on what che likes (he's the one who did 'miss out' on it).

uhh everything really.

If it's popular, you can bet I never listen to it.

Ricky Martin, that country singer dude, Boys 2 men, mariah carey. never heard them.

I haven't even heard Nirvana's nevermind until months later (although I was in boot camp and couldn't listen to music )

Luciano Pavarotti, Queen, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra....

There's popular and then there's popular. After all, even the Bible is popular culture.

I like queen of that list. They may have been popular at one time, but that was before my time.

so technically I'm not on a band wagon. They were never popular when I started liking them.

There's some series called '24' that I haven't seen a minute off. But for some reason I get the impression that it's a popular serier. I guess it's 'cause people seems to assume that I'm watching it.

Furthermore, I'm still not sure what song JohnT's talkning about in the opening post. Sure, I must have heard it but I haven't burdened my brain with that information.

I fairly certain that's where all the accusations of "selling out" come from when a niche performer becomes popular.

although you could argue Metallica was popular at one time.

But I liked them before they became popular, so that doesn't count

As for Nirvana. I like them as well, but only after Kirk Cobain died .

harry potter seems like it was designed for kids. I'm more into adult things.

Even Lord of the Rings I felt should have been given an R rating and made more bloody. All that killing, and not a single drop of blood

'Gulliver's Travels' is frequently bowdlerized and thought of as being primarily for children yet is a sophisticated satire on politics and society. People see the great big giants and the tiny Lilliputians and the talking horses and assign it to the play room.

Is the A Team more to your liking?

On a completely different subject, briefly- is that Tony Shalhoub in 'Big Night Out' in your avatar?

I loved that film. Comedy and food- I was in heaven.

An episode I actually enjoyed.

Like Frasier's 'Restaurant' episode, and the 'Deli Nazi' episode, with the imported dog food and imported British biscuits at horrendous marked up prices.
