I just looked at it at 1024x768. At that resolution, it looks okay. Unfortunately, when I set my iMac to 1024x768, the text is uncomfortably small, and the screen flicker gives me a headache. Therefore, I still find the current layout unacceptable. A good layout MUST include significant amounts of empty space, which the current layout (at 800x600) lacks.

I just got back from vacation, and what do I find when I visit Apolyton? An unreadable forums front page!

The forum listing is easy to read, but the "polls" column has far too much text, and far too little white space, making it impossible to read. With 99 users displayed in the "Currently on Apolyton" section, the only username I can pick out is Murgatroyd's, and that is only because the link has been highlighted ever since I sent him a private message.

I'm using Internet Exploder 5 at 1024x768.

14"??? I threw mine in the trash YEARS ago I don't think there will be a whole lot of ppl who still use it, 15" seems to be pretty much the standard nowadays

Actually, I'm not entirely sure of the size of mine. Exactly where do I measure it? My monitor is whatever size the built-in ones on iMacs are.

What's wrong with 14" monitors? As a matter of fact, 9" amber screens are sufficient for system admin work.

Actually, I don't know how big my monitor officially is. Using a ruler, I get about a 13" viewable area, so it is probably a 14" monitor. (Yes, it is over five years old!)


PS. I've been viewing the forums at 1024x768 for the last few minutes. The eyestrain from the flicker and small text is unbelievable.

I like the new layout. I can easily see which forums I'm interested in that have new material, no change there. It's nice to be able to check for new PM's without having to scroll to the bottom of a page and with the News listings I will probably change my habits and come directly to the Forums, instead of checking other areas first.

No difficulty reading anything. I'm using IE5 at 800x600 on a 14" monitor with a 13.2" diagonal viewing area (says so on the box ).

I just realized: I forgot to make my usual complaint here!

If you can't find the time to make the current front page usable, could you at least set up the old forums front page as an alternative? Say, at an address like http://civilization.gamestats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate2.cgi?

Ten days later: a re-evaluation:
The polls section is now readable
The News section is still too crowded, and the "Private Messages" section, being the same size as the individual news sections, gets lost in the crowd.
The "Online Users" is as unreadable a mass of text as ever.

I support Mark von Wagner's proposal for how to fix the forums page.

I'm usually not one to critizise, but I find myself visiting Apolyton less lately, mostly due to the main page problem... Its too crowded... When I visit Apolyton, I usually stay away from the main forum page.

No offense reismark, but the CGN forums aren't fun to visit anymore, too much spam...

Holy cow.

If you're so annoyed by the new design that you want the discussion to go on for weeks here, why not just establish a couple of links on your desktop or in your favourites folder to the forum pages you visit the most? That way you can bypass the front forum page completely, and the World will be a better place for all of us.

Yes, I'm indifferent towards the new design. I don't think it makes much difference from the way it was before.

Ah, but the all-intelligent admins do not give us a date, which means that it can be delayed indefinately... My hypothesis is that they are still too busy playing CTP2.... Alas, when CTP2 craze starts dying down, I think the problem may be fixed... Until then, we will just have to keep our fingers crossed and keep BUMPing this thread.

I know. Buyt there's always the chance that they're going to expand into websites some day, and if they are, your forums list page deserves a place.
