Arcanum has moderate fights. And guards to not need to be killed.

I remember that being quite difficult aswell, but if I recall correctly they can easily be killed with explosives. They're rocks, afterall, so regular weapons aren't going to hurt them much. But with enough grenades...

The rock mine was frustrating though in that there was only one solution and that was to go in fighting. Most of the other areas/problems allowed different approaches. The bridge guards are a great example of that but if you're a combat light character then the mines are difficult.

and my order...
BG1 - the first and possibly the weakest interface

BG2 - story follows on

Arcanum - break from D+D

IWD - very combat focused

planescape - different from the rest

SOulbringer - comes ina doublepack with planescape and played by at least 3 whole people on this forum!
IWD2

KOTR

NWN

Morrowind -big and slow and depending on your PC you might have upgraded enough to play it with 'everything on'.

That was my problem. I played the game as a dialogue ace who wasn't that great of a fighter.

The great thing in Arcanum is that you could even get the brigands to pay you and let you cross the bridge if you could talk to them correctly. No other game among those listed has something like this. BG is very linear imho. Also, I think the D-D system is the worst role playing system ever made (it was the first, all others improved on it). The magic and skills systems in Arcanum or, even better, Morrowind are way better.

Many people consider the system in Morrowind to be on the verge of being broken, or just broken.

I think he's confusing the ability to customise magic with the actual mechanics of the system.

I know that the whole Morrowind system is ripe for abuse, but its openness is great. Arcanum provides schools of magic with a progression that makes sense, while D-D lets you learn fireball when you never learnt burning hands or any other fire spell. Plus who would not learn fireball in D-D at level 3? There are far too many useless spells and overpowered spells in D-D, and a clear lack of consistency in a spell user progression with these rules. The system is both more rigid than Morrowind and worse in terms of specialisation than Arcanum.

With the way magic works in D&D, such requirements would make no sense. A mage is harnessing magic power and willing it to his desired effect. A burning hands spell and a fireball spell would have little correlation between each other... except in complexity, which is why there is a level difference between the two.

And of course, if you want a pyromaniac wizard and feel that he should focus solely on fire magic.... then do that.

Someone who doesn't want to blow up his friends? Or a specialised mage who is restricted from evocation spells?

I think that this is mostly due to limitations on the PC, since many of the spells are specialized and can only be put to their full effect with a flexible GM.

Morrowind sytem sucks if you want to have a balanced system, but in terms of role playing, rewarding people for doing things rather than killing monsters, then it's great, as it lets you improve skills you're actually using.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

a system that encourages you to run and jump around the town like a... well like something that runs and jumps alot .

Actually I do like the way the values increase. It's the level up system that I think is really stupid.
