I remembered from that mess on Unity, that a few crewmen were creating an "arms room" in one corner of our cargo storage..
But where did those arms went after Planetfall, I had no idea.
And then one day a young man knocked at my newly - built quarters, one of the engineering staff.
He said that my help would be highly appreciated at "very important matter".
Well, if one needs help of a hacker here, then its serious..
Imagine what could a person with immense knowledge in networking help on a planet who knows no information networks!
Maybe only help building those networks..
He took me to cargo storage which was now styled "class 2 living quarters".
You should seen all that! Im not much of an explorer, so I didnt inspect every part of our new "base" down here on Chiron, therefore I couldnt ever imagine that people can live in such cramped conditions - every shelf where our building materials, tools and provisions were once stored was filled with four to eight "beds" as they called those sleeping places..
And there it was at the very end of cargo storage - the "arms room".
Separated from all the chaos out here with a wall of synthmetal..
It was locked. Locked by a CPU fault in its security system. Possibly caused at the moment when we hit planet..
We didnt have the tools to cut through synthmetal - I understood it only now, in this very pitiful moment, when we stood there with nothing but naked hands against a synthmetal wall.
What a bad luck!
The only thing we could do was try to unlock the door through breaking the security system..
Thats why they called me.
I was an expert in breaking something. Anything. But at most - security. I disliked even the word "security". Maybe that's the reason why I became a proffessional spy..
It's just I think that if one has any reason to institute security, he has something to hide and if he has something to hide than it's either something evil or something valuable. If it's something valuable - I must get it, if it's something evil, I must help exterminating it..
So far the philosophy, back in real life I've hacked almost everything in the 'Net back on Earth, it's mostly the reason why Im here - not on Earth. Just dont ask why, Im not gonna tell you how I pasted my word in the Unity's passenger list, but it was damn easy compared to deleting it from population records on our distant home..
So I was there, with no available digital connection means, not even a piece of electronics..
What could I do?
I unleashed my natural hate of securities onto that locked seal with hardest blow with fist I've made in my life.
My fist was in blood, but never mind it - I looked at the red "open/closed" indicator as it lit off and then slowly came back to life.
System restart..
"Thats good! Thats damn good!" I thought as we both read beautiful green letters appearing on the black status screen.
"Ready for input" it said.
The young man typed in the password, an incredibly long one, so I started to wonder, how in the hell he can remember so much numbers in one string, and, after a few second consideration, the CPU let us in.
I was curious about why there are no guards, just two of us in the vicinity of an open arms storage, but seemingly I was their last hope and the command staff didnt even believe I will make it..
A rover!
Well, it wasnt exactly what I expected, but the youngster or even teenager, as by first look of him, seemed well aware of the expected content of this room.
However, it was not a Unity Rover, prototype of which I had watched a hundred times during the broadcasts of "Unity Mission" on BBC.
It was somehow different - it looked filled to the top with a hi-tech equipment.
The youngster said nothing when I asked him, what kind of rover it was. Damn security!
But wait! I have seen such shapes already. They look so suspiciuosly familiar..
"A PROBE rover!" suddenly came to my mind.
Yeah, that was right - all those antennaes, electronics, camouflage, sensors, radars and even "Life Support Kit" for hostile and polluted environments..
It was one hundred percent fully equipped probe rover.
From "Mission Venus" back on late 2140's.
Those where fitted with the best electronics and sendor systems available in that time and had specially hardened chassis for Venus's hundred atmosphere pressure. They were at the edge..
And we had one of them right there before us!
Seems we have not lost all we had - at least a piece of our advanced technology is available..
