Well,I suppose I can just about follow that banning someone for abusive or otherwise unacceptable posting (on a site which goes in for enforcing civilised conduct, that is) has little sting when the person banned has a DL and just goes on visiting the site in his or her unbanned persona.
Dimly I can guess at some fun to be had.
Is the answer for Nadia/Tear to re-register under some comparable name from a different computer?
SG2. ACOL is a games site (Alpha Centauri origins I think) where quite a few Apolytoners hang out. Ming lets his hair down there, for one. It's off topic goes in for quick back chat and one liners. It's a free for all, no noticeable moderation. Not nasty in tone or content though.
A thing that puzzled me is that there is some committed games' player discussion and the one time I visited, a few days back, I did a quick post, forgetting for a moment that I'd never registered with the site. The post nevertheless promptly appeared - and with my Apolyton sig attached??
Anyway, I suppose there is some link between the two sites. Came as a surprise though. Felt a touch paranoid for a second.

Now I am surpised at that! There is no link (MarkG will confirm). We certainly don't exchange poster information between the two sites. The only link is that many of the same people frequent the sites. Are you sure you didn't register in a dream (besides sigs are disabled on ACOL).
That's not a bad idea of providing proof. I don't know if that would be acceptable to MarkG or not.
[added this] BTW, that's one of the fairest descriptions I have seen of ACOL from a non-regular. I think it sums things pretty well - a much more balanced description than some.

I am confused. How could JETW be a dl of BTBM if JETW was here first?

East Street Trader,
I did a search on ACOL and found no trace of you. I think you are mistaken. Maybe it was another part of Apolyton.
MarkG,
I spoke with Nadia on the phone tonight and got a fair degree of hassle as she is hopping mad at me as this is all, indirectly, my fault. I told her you were looking into it but she wants to talk to you to sort this out. Can you send her your number(n.levitskaya@talk21.com) or shall I send you hers?

"If you are going to have two people posting from the same computer, you might not want to be a repeated DL offender. How can people tell when you're being honest now?"
Nadia now lives elsewhere, the problem should not recurr.

She's now got her own (shared) apartment, own computer, own ISP. I cannot envisage the problem recurring. Even if she visits our place, I'm not letting her near my computer and getting all this nonsense again.

So what is the point that you are making? You think that her being banned is justified.

Thanks Ming,
I'll pass the message on and get her to do that - means I'll get more grief I suppose.

Sorry, you've still lost me!
This thread is about sorting something out not dissecting the past. I admit to the double logins that, indeed, were double logins.
However, Nadia is not a double login. She is a friend of my wife and myself. She was in need of help, she stayed at our place, she used the computer (I even helped her register here). In my book you help people when they have need - not invent rules to make helping difficult.
So, what do you suggest, we have her shot at dawn as an inconvenience to custom and practise or what?

Ming,
Sorry. That came out more waspish than I intended. I just want to get this sorted for her as she (and especially my wife) will just give me hell.
Two weeks ban from all that would be paradise!

GP,
Only I'm not crying wolf. I'm not even crying. All I'm saying is that sniffing IPs like this without putting things in context produces results as if something more potent was being sniffed.
I am not claiming the right to have the population of London logged onto my computer ad infinitum and giving myself the ability to deny all responsibility. I am saying that, in the past, circumstances occurred that allowed the confusion here to happen. That these events are unlikely to happen again in the future seems to elude your thinking on this.
The truth about it is this. Someone who has done no wrong has been banned. So, again, rather than having a bit of fun digging at me, which by the way is hardly speeding this matter to resolution, what do you suggest?
Ming, I would suggest there is something in international conventions about that.

I just got back to work today and found and e-mail from Nadia sent before Christmas. She has e-mailed MarkG as Ming suggested but hadn't heard anything at that time. Has this been sorted out yet? I think she is due back this weekend or next week.
Mobius. It would certainly prove matters. I can't speak for Nadia but, unfortunately, I won't be there. So, if she decides to come and I can't then it must prove that I don't exist.

From what I've read here, I'm a DL and Apolytoners who share a computer risk being banned.
Wouldn't the intent of the DL be an important consideration? A person can't very well argue two sides of a question without confusing people, so that would be a case where a DL is useful. On the other hand, using a DL to hide behind in order to flame someone, is wrong.
It would seem that a person's postings should be evaluated, rather than the person.

Probably some tech screw-up. I'll e-mail her and ask her to resend. Thanks.

Allemand,
Sorry I missed your post. That's a fair point.
Anyone who has seen the content of Nadia's posts on here would clearly see that she posts about very different things and in a very different style to me.
