Bush Defends Assertions of Iraq-Al Qaeda Relationship

quote:

President Bush yesterday defended his assertions that there was a relationship between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda, putting him at odds with this week's finding of the bipartisan Sept. 11 commission.

"The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al Qaeda: because there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda," Bush said after a Cabinet meeting. As evidence, he cited Iraqi intelligence officers' meeting with bin Laden in Sudan. "There's numerous contacts between the two," Bush said.

Tired of ads?

Anybody who really believed Al-Qaeda would have anything to do with Saddam are AMAZINGLY ignorant of the attitudes of both.

EDIT:

I'm not saying there aren't people all over the world who are this stupid - but stupidity is not something to be encouraged or to be proud of.

Why? Baathist Syria manages to cooperate with fundamentalist Iran and Hizbollah. There is today cooperation in Iraq between Zarqawi and ex-Baathists.

This is not to say that there WAS cooperation between AQ and Iraq. But the barrier in the early '90s seems to have been Iraqs reluctance to take the risks associated with giving shelter to AQ, not any reluctance on the part of AQ to approach Iraq for help.

Hitler hated Communism.

Politics makes strange bed fellows.

Which, let me say once again, is NOT evidence that there WAS collusion. Merely that it was not impossible on ideological grounds.

Try almost impossible then.

That crack about Hitler doesn't seem right - hating Stalinism, fair enough. Hating USSR, OK. But it's a bit of a leap to call your own party the National Socialists and then say Communism is a bad idea...

Er, Hitler consistenly hated Communism.

Surely someone who is quick to call people stupid, realizes that there was nothing particularly "socialist" about the Nazi party. Its name was related to populist trends in the early 1920s party, not to Marxism or any genuine socialism. Those populist trends were destroyed by violence in 1935.

Can the Commnist part of Apolyton members here confirm for me that Hitler was firm anti-communist?

Er, AQ was deep in bed with Mullah Omar - was he not a brutal dictator? When has AQ ever had a problem with brutality?

Insurgents of all kinds have long cooperated with brutal dictators, as long as that brutal dictator was hostile to whatever regime the insurgents were trying to overthrow. Do you actually not realize that.

How many speeches by Bin-Laden have you actually analyzed?

Bin-Laden has presented these reasons as the immediate trigger for his turn to Jihad. This is not, however, the underlying reason for his holy war.

His idea is based on the Jihad against christians and jews. That's actually part of Al-Qaeda's full name.

Al-Qaeda's basic world view sees the world as: "dar al Islam" (land of Islam) and "dar al harb" (land of war).

Guess where America, Britain and Israel are?

I wouldn't say he was a dictator. Certainly he wasn't the only voice of the Taliban. But that's splitting hairs.

insurgent groups thrive on opposing the govt they are living under.

Viet Cong had took support from China and the USSR. Anti-Nazi resistance took help from the USSR. ANC took help from afircan dictatorships. Anti-Portugese insurgents in Angola and Mozambique took support from USSR and China. Kurdish insurgents in Turkey took support from Syria. Kurdish insurgents in Iraq took support from the Shah of Iran. Insurgents against both the Shah, and against the Islamist regime in Iran, took support from Saddam Hussein.

Hell, American Patriots happily took support from Louis XVI.

I think you see the pattern here, no?

Yes.
Commies were among the first victims (chronologically) of nazism. The communist people, and the communist ideas were completely opposed to nazism, since they are deviod of the whole purity crap, since they intend to free the people from the capital's and the State's cllutches, etc.

It is no wonder the capitalists have chosen to support Hitler, that's because they knew he'd take stronger actions against communism than the Weimar Repblic (which was definitely not commie)

Yet another UR lie refuted

quote:
Putin: Russia Gave Bush Iraq Intelligence

Friday June 18, 2004 2:31 PM

By BAGILA BUKHARBAYEVA

Associated Press Writer

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) - Russia gave the Bush administration intelligence after the September 11 attacks that suggested Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq was preparing attacks in the United States, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

Putin said he couldn't comment on how critical the Russians' information was in the U.S. decision to invade Iraq. He said Russia didn't have any information that Saddam's regime was actually behind any terrorist acts.

``After Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, the Russian special services, the intelligence service, received information that officials from Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist attacks in the United States and outside it against the U.S. military and other interests,'' Putin said.

He said President Bush personally thanked one of the leaders of Russia's intelligence agencies for the information. There was no immediate comment from U.S. officials.

``It's one thing to have information that Saddam's regime is preparing terrorist attacks, (but) we didn't have information that it was involved in any known terrorist attacks,'' Putin said in the Kazakh capital Astana after regional economic and security summits.

Putin said the intelligence didn't cause Russia to waver from its firm opposition to the war.

``Despite that information about terrorist attacks being prepared by Saddam's regime, Russia's position on Iraq remains unchanged,'' Putin said.

Putin didn't elaborate on any details of the terror plots or mention whether they were tied to the al-Qaida terror network.

A commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States reported this week that while there were contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq, they did not appear to have produced ``a collaborative relationship.''

President Bush, however, insisted Thursday that Saddam had ``numerous contacts'' with al-Qaida and said Iraqi agents had met with the terror network's leader, Osama bin Laden, in Sudan.

Saddam ``was a threat because he had terrorist connections - not only al-Qaida connections, but other connections to terrorist organizations,'' Bush said.

Also Thursday, a top Russian diplomat called for international inspectors to conclusively resolve the question of whether Iraq had any weapons of mass destruction - one of the main reasons Bush used to justify the war. No such weapons have been found since Saddam's fall.

``This problem must be resolved ... because to a great extent it became the pretext for the start of the war against Iraq,'' Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov said in Moscow, according to Interfax news agency.

He said such a finding would allow the U.N. Security Council to ``turn a page and finally close the dossier on Iraqi weapons.''

Yet another UR lie refuted - v 2.0 Remove this text

quote:
On Wednesday, the September 11 commission released a staff report that said it found "no credible evidence that Iraq and al Qaeda cooperated on attacks against the United States."

The commission also said that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden did "explore possible cooperation with Iraq," but said the contacts did not appear to have led to a "collaborative relationship"

Both the Bush administration and members of the 9/11 commission have dismissed the suggestion that the report contradicts the White House's position that Saddam's regime had ties with al Qaeda.

Hours after Putin spoke, Bush addressed troops in a lengthy speech at Fort Lewis in Washington state but didn't react to the Russian leader's remarks.

He repeated his position that Saddam's regime was a threat to the world and the dangers it posed were the grounds for the invasion last year.

"This is a regime which gave cash rewards to families of suicide bombers. This is a regime that sheltered terrorist groups," Bush said.

He also cited Musab Abu al-Zarqawi, the wanted insurgent in Iraq suspected of many terror bombings in Iraq, as an "al Qaeda associate." Zarqawi is a key suspect in the Baghdad car bombing Thursday that killed 35 people.

Bush told reporters Thursday that the administration never said that "the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated" between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. "We did say there were numerous contacts between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda," he said.

"The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al Qaeda, because there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda," Bush said. (Full story)

Vice President Dick Cheney said Thursday the evidence of that relationship was "overwhelming."

"There clearly was a relationship. It's been testified to. The evidence is overwhelming," Cheney said in an interview with CNBC's Capitol Report. "It goes back to the early 90s. It involves a whole series of contacts, high-level contacts with Osama bin Laden and Iraqi intelligence officials."

Cheney told CNBC that cooperation included a brigadier general in the Iraqi intelligence service going to Sudan, where bin Laden was based prior to moving his operations to Afghanistan, to train al Qaeda members in bomb-making and document forgery. (Full story)

Commission chairman Thomas Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey, downplayed any conflict at a news conference following Thursday's hearings.

"What we have found is, Were there contacts between al Qaeda and Iraq? Yes. Some of them were shadowy but they were there," Kean said.

Vice-chairman Lee Hamilton, a Democrat, said that the reported differences "are not that apparent to me."

Commission member James Thompson told CNN on Friday that the controversy was "a little mystifying."

"We said that there is no evidence to support the notion that al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein collaborated to produce 9/11," the former Illinois governor said. "President Bush said that weeks ago, he said it again yesterday. Vice President Cheney said it again yesterday."

He said that the report agreed with the administration's position that there were contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda.

"They may be in possession of information about contacts beyond those that we found." Thompson said. "I don't know, that wasn't any of our business. Our business was 9/11."

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast...rror/index.html

Even the heads of the 9/11 commision don't agree with the media's blantantly false claim that there were no contacts between Saddam's Iraq and Al Qaeda...
