TO on snes/ps1 was made by the same people as FFT so they were somewhat similar. TO was made first but gba TO was made later so it's a bit different but not majorly. i think both are good. there is also FFTA(a for advance) on gba so i imagine your friend would really like that as well.
despite it's training flaws i'm starting to really enjoy TO on ps1. plus there is a trick for anyone who really hates training. what you do it take 2 clerics of the same level and de-equip all their weapons so they can only use their fists(which is very weak). since they heal for many times the amount of their fist damage they will never kill each other. then you let this run on comp vs comp training for hours to level them up to the max level(50?). then anytime you want to train it will be very easy as you can train vs level 50 characters and level up really quick.
disgaea is supposed to be the best game out in this genre right now from what i've read. i really need to get it. i'm usually a little behind the curve on games though as i seem to always have a backlog i want to play(i'm just now playing TO on ps1). plus i generally like playing older games in the same genre i haven't played yet than newer ones as they sometimes ruin the old games for me.
