That's true. The Portuguese had more posession time of the ball.

Well, it's time to sum up the english teams participation in the euro 2004. I didn't see all the english matches, but one thing that I've noticed is how little the team seems to get out of Beckham's offensive qualities. I'm not a person that thinks Beckham's as good as some people seems to think, but I can't deny that he has a couple of really top class abilities. We didn't see much of that though. As far as I could tell, he often used short passes and otherwise he worked as some kind of defensive midfielder. Nothing wrong about his defence, but there's better defensive midfielders out there.

He can be good with penalty kicks, and sometimes he can make accurate long passes. Otherwise, he's neither a natural striker nor a hardy defender.

Great game and the right result. England weren't rubbish, but they weren't great and Portugal played the more positive football.

Despite all the talk about Rooney, it is clear that England don't have a striker of the calibre of Lineker or Shearer and it shows. In fact I don't think England have had a really good team since 1990.

The rules say you're not allowed to hinder or push the keeper away when he is about to grab an airborne football. Clearly he was pushed aside by the 2 English in this case.

The English themselves are to blame because of their defensive play. But that's mainly because of their strikers like to play on the counter, especially with Owen and fast runners such as Vassal.
They played like liverpool = noob play

I don't know about the Campbell goal. Give the referee a break though, he had to make an on the spot decision and in 99% of those cases the keeper gets the benefit of the doubt.

In fact I thought the referee had an outstanding game and should be credited for providing the stage for such a great contest.

The referee had a great game? You really are joking I hope.. lots of petty free kicks, and soft decisions. Maybe it's just we're used to watching English games where the threshold for a foul might be somewhat higher, I don't know, we prefer a tougher, more physical game of football, not one where you have players screaming because they tripped over someone's foot..

We gave a good account of ourselves, and it's made me glad that the most of the stories of this tournament so far seemed to have revolved around England

I mean, we outnumbered Portuguese fans in their own stadium in their own country - if there's anything that will be remember, THAT will be it. Has it ever happened before at an international tournament?

They have?

It might have something to do with you being in the UK and all. From my viewpoint, not much have been about England at all.

It gave good perspective to spend a week in Switzerland during the tournament and speak to a load of people from different countries.

Lots of other stuff happening to other countries. Rooney has been a big story but there have been plenty of others.

But he overruled an assistant referee who had a much better view of the goal

IMO the ref had a terrible game. Totally partial. I'm willing to overlook the disallowed goal, proper or otherwise, cos frankly we didn't deserve to win that match.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I think one of the BBC sports presentors best summed it up, "The best team won, but they shouldn't have"

Thing is, England seem to go into these matches, expecting the ref to be impartial, expecting to defend for 90% of the game and thinking that if only we get penalties, the laws of average's should put it in our favour ...

well .. the fact is, Not every ref is imparial, we never win when we spend 90% of the game in our own half (nor do we deserve to), and each time we go into a penalty shoot out, the odds of winning it our exactly the same as the last time .. in other words, we may as well throw everything for a win during extra time.

There was a load of good things to come out of this competition though, Ashley Cole was brilliant, Rooney was a marval, England on ocassions played the best football ive ever seen them play. I think Sven has done a good job up to now, and this is a great way to learn and improve before WC2006.

It's really lame to try to blame it on the penalty spot as some people seems to. Beckham should obviously be experienced enough to be able to place the ball properly. And if the english managers had complained about the spot twice, shouldn't they have told him about it? After all, it's the same for everyone, isn't it? Anyhow, from my perspective it's a lot more valid to complain about the disallowed goal, even if I personally think it was the right decision by Urs Meier. Stop complaining about the referee if you don't want to start to look like a bunch of italians. The referee can make mistakes, but that wouldn't come as a suprise to a bunch of so called professional footballers. You have to be sure that you're better than the other team instead of waisting all your engery on the referee.

"Beckham should obviously be experienced enough to be able to place the ball properly"

His kicking action is poor. His standing (left) foot never has studs on the ground, but instead rolls onto the outside of his foot. So it's no wonder his penalty-taking is poor, he just can't shoot.

Correct, it's a good action for getting curve on a ball (ie freekicks), but you don't need to do that to score a penalty.

"Correct, it's a good action for getting curve on a ball (ie freekicks)"

I'd dispute that as well - the curve comes from the kicking foot, not the standing foot. The standing foot needs to give you as great a stability as possible, and to do that you need studs in the ground?
