I was inside that stadium! Cool experience. There were more than 80.000 people in there and 100's of thousands outside in the streets. Such a feast hasn't happened since the 1987 Eurobasket and the 1970's Rolling Stones concert that also took place there.
I was in early and had got myself a good seat, but at the end, the police was unable to hold the crowd which gradually flooded the pitch and nearly drowned the feast into utter chaos. The fact is that with all these people, none of us from above could see much. I felt like a fool to be there all these hours and see everything from a distance, while many people just got in the last minutes and found themselves a few meters from the players. In fact, after they entered the pitch and hailed the crowd and all initial cheering was over, I left, not wanting to listen to all the speeches from all the officials, like the Mayor, the Archbishop, the PM, etc. When I say I left, I actually leaped off the top of the stadium flank onto the hill that surrounds the stadium. That's what's cool about that stadium: since it's ancient, it's very steep and you feel you're on top of everything. Only the marble there is a very hard place to sit on, for hours.
Ok, I missed the fireworks, no problem. The stadium was on fire the moment the victory bus arrived anyway. Fromn what I've heard, the common opinion is that the fiesta was not as well organised as it could have been and so it failed to unleash the full joy of the people. The speaker in particular was horrible. Kostalas is a known sports commentator, but for the wrong sport.... he is an expert in ballet, ice skating, gymnastics and other such artistic sports and cultural happenings. Although I accept he is a really gay person indeed, he is unfit to cheer up a football crowd.
Nevertheless, I was glad to be there. Had to do it for posterity's sake.
At least, from what I've heard, Gaggatsis was booed. And of course everybody used extreme profanity, in the presence of the Archbishop, the First Lady and many other highly sensitive ears.
