Eivind, do you have ToT? I've been having a play with some units for you, and it's a real struggle getting the cavalry helmets to fit in the small MGE unit slot. ToT gives you plenty of headroom

Oh, beutiful, Gareth! Thanks!

Yes, I do have TOT, I'm not very familiar with it though. I've only played El Aurens on it onc (which I loved btw ). Although I am aware that TOT is better than MGE in many ways, it sort of limits the amount of players for the scen, as not very people own TOT, as opposed to the masses that have MGE.

Is it only the cavalries that is a problem?

What masses?

There's about 30 of us here, at CDG and CivFan. Most now seem to have ToT. As for the great unwashed masses who play and lurk but don't post, who cares about them?

Sorry great unwashed masses, I love you really

No problem - me too. However, if you use a text editor for MGE scenarios, them making a ToT one is identical. The additional features don't have to be used - but who'd turn down more events space, individual sounds and civ-unique units to name 3 advantages?

Look at the source code petiotion thread. There's a hell of alot more than 30. I did maybe though exaggerate a teny tiny bit with 'masses'

I use notepad to edit the original files. It's just that when I first make a scenario, I like to do it thoroughly, and if had all those extra feutres, I couldn't just not use 'em. So it would take me just as long to get familiar with all that ToT can offer as it would making the scen in MGE. That's why I'm so sceptical.

I must honestly admit that it does not look as pritty as the ToT unit, but isn't this a fair MGE compromise? Was this the only unit you had some trouble with?

Eivind....that magazine has dissapeared

@Gareth: That unit looks brilliant, and it's not looking bad at all in MGE format.

What would units represent, regiments?

In terms of artillery, why not just make the cannons aircraft carriers instead of subs? you don;t have to worry about the issue of seeing subs.

Pablo provided me with this 3D map today, which will be a great source for unit placement. I'm still in the lookout for a good above angled map, so I can draw the civ-map as detailed as possible.

Point taken, but I don't think many of the OT'ers and vanilla civ posters play scenarios. Could be wrong though. I just think it's high time we all switched to ToT - 'everyone' seems to have it and it's far and away the best version of civ2, so why not use it's additional features? You're a far more experienced scenario designer than me, but even I've started using it for my feeble attempt at a scenario. Everything is familiar from my abortive attempts at MGE scenario design as I never used the in-game editor anyway.

BTW, the advanced unit stuff is fairly easy (if you know which order civs are listed the units_advanced part of the rules file ). The individual sound slots are assigned in the last part of rules.txt, the additional events macros are explained in the macro.txt file in the ToT directory and the huge potential of the graphics is readily apparent.

I haven't gone to get Waterloo yet, and the worst part is that the friend that has it came over for an asado last friday (but forgot to bring it). I have to return some videos to him soon, though, so either later today or tomorrow i'll have it.

Only 10 months late for these

If your still serious about completing this after the Desert War scenario Eivind, I'll make up some Prussians, Dutch-Belgians, Hanoverians and Brunswickers to complete the Allied forces.

Same rules apply as the Brits: please don't recycle as 7YW soldiers etc.
