quote: US Secret Service clash with Chilean Intelligence Agents and Carabineros
Santiago, CHILE - U.S. President George W. Bush reached into a throng of squabbling bodyguards and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders, for which they didn't had access authorization.
Several Chilean Intelligence Agents and US agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the Mapocho Central Station Cultural Centre where the dinner of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was being held in Santiago.
Bush was posing for the official picture on the red carpet with Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, his wife, First Lady Luisa Durán and US First Lady, Laura, when the president noticed the confrontation unfolding behind him.
He stepped away from them and reached into the quarreling crowd and hauled the lead Secret Service agent from Chilean security agents, while the Chief of the Chilean Security ordered their agents to let lead Bush agent to step inside, in spite that the U.S. delegation did not previously informed the local authorities of the presence of the agents at the diner, inside the already secure building.
For a few seconds Bush met resistance from the Chilean officers. Bush was seen shaking his head and muttering under his breath as he walked away.
UC - TV Canal 13, APEC's summit official network, showed the incident in live broadcast to more than 50 countries.
The White House and La Moneda press offices declared that the incident was "only a missunderstood" and after Bush's request "the issue was resolved".
Lagos - Bush official diner
After the incident at Mapocho Cultural Center, the Chilean government informed that the U.S. delegation asked to reduce the guest on the official diner that President Lagos will host for Mr. Bush, from 500 to 20.
Also U.S. Secret Service asked Chilean government that tomorrow's official diner, the same that presidents Hu Jintao and Vladimir Putin already have on Thursday and Friday respectively, don't take place in the interior gardens of La Moneda Palace but on indoors. Chilean government agreed to this request. |
