Tired of ads?

By the way, I posted two questions while GMing the last game that weren't discussed and I think they should be before this one starts.

Double Deflector
A couple of games ago I sent 4 Nukes at Darkcloud who deflected to Jonny who deflected to Darkcloud. GM Smiley handled it by having Nukes #2 & 4 destroy Darkcloud cities, and numbers #1 & 3 deflected by Darkcloud to Jonny. Jonny then deflected Nuke #1 back to Jonny and Nuke #3 (#2 for Jonny) destroyed a city. Straightforward so far, but here is the difficult part. That Nuke #1 going back to Darkcloud was the 5th incoming nuke, so Smiley had it deflect back to Jonny again, where it was the 3rd incoming nuke to Jonny and deflected again to Darkcloud. For Darkcloud it was now the 6th incoming nuke and destroyed a city. At the time it was suggested by someone (Theben??) that the nuke should only have been deflected once by each deflector and it should have destroyed a Darkcloud city as the 5th Nuke to be aimed at Darkcloud. (However as the result was the same either way, this was not much of an issue at the time).

This past game EPW and Vlad Antlerkov similarly both Deflected to each other and Jonny sent 2 Nukes at EPW. The first nuke was deflected by EPW to Vlad while the 2nd nuke destroyed EPW's last remaining city. The second nuke arrived as Vlad 1st incoming nuke and was deflected back to EPW where it was the 3rd incoming nuke (though there were no cities left anyway) and deflected back to Vlad again. It was then Vlad's 2nd incoming nuke and destroyed his last remaining city. If the deflectors only work once, Vlad would have remained in the game, and unlike the first example, this would have had an effect on the game outcome.

While I handled this the same way Smiley did, do the players think this is the way it should be handled?

Double Spies
While this didn't come up, it easily could have, and as I am not sure how I would have dealt with it, I thought it best to clarify (it has probably come up in previous games, but I have not seen it and it is not in the rules).

Last game if Jonny had changed his rules slightly, both Hercules and Jonny would have had one city and a spy left on the final turn. If they had both sent 2 nukes and a spy at the other player (which would be a good strategy in my opinion), what would the spies do?

- both get through an accomplish their missions, in which case both players live another day
- cancel each other out with neither players spy succeeding, resulting in both sets of orders being completed (which in this example would have resulted in victory for the cockroaches).

Just to points that I think should be clarified.

Thanks,
* Sparrowhawk

Got spare money?

The deflection one has been discussed before; a deflect shield can only deflect once, and the second time a given nuke hits a player it gets through.

The double spies is easy. Spies don't cancel spy orders ever, so both sets of nukes are destroyed.

Increase Your PM Length

While it seems that DrSpike remembers something that the three of you do not....perhaps you could answer the question as to which way you prefer...

Should deflectors work more then once or should they only deflect the same nuke one time?

Last I heard, the same nuek could bd deflected any number of times, it just counted as a new one when it came in (so, if you got hit by one nuke, it bounced, and then it was sent back at you, it counted as a second nuke,a nd would get through). I think I prefer that to Spike's solution.

I guess nothing has made it in into the rules, but we were definitely playing as a de facto rule that the same nuke cannot be deflected twice by one shield. I can't say exactly when it arose, as it was many games ago.

Perhaps some more of the 'oldies' will recall, but it was around the time I was tweaking the rules a lot and strangely some people just prefer to play.

It arose in Nuclear War 1 and the rule was (and should be) that nukes can only be deflected once.

Reason: To stop forever bouncing nukes.

I thought it was in the rules

Let's resolve this issue with my preference for only one deflection (for reasons of simplicity) and I sign up with my cities:

Blue, Yellow, Green

Well in Sparrow's example they wouldn't bounce forever. However, I agree I would prefer to keep the de facto rule that has been used in the past. It's elegant and easily understood.

Except, of course, that the nukes don't bounce forever; sooner or later, they'll become one of the nukes that gets through.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Boris, I doubt it is too late, just post your above city names in the game thread and send in your round 1 orders to Smiley now and I imagine he will add you into the game.

(and if anyone else is interested I am sure Smiley will accept new players until the first round results are posted...though even if he doesn't accept it, doesn't hurt to try )
