Johannes/Jan Vermeer:
" Johannes, or Jan, Vermeer was born in Delft in Holland in 1632. He was introduced to art at an early age, as his father was a local art dealer who had connections with various artists. Hendrick van der Burch, a Delft porcelain maker who also knew Pieter DeHooch, rented a house to the Vermeer family, and quite possibly contributed to Vermeer's training. The artist Carel Fabritius was another of Vermeer's influences, especially in the field of perspective and optics. A family friend, Leonaert Bramer, had studied optics in Italy as well.
Very little is actually known about Vermeer. He left no letters or diaries, although it seems he ran a tavern for a while. He also married a girl called Catherina and fathered eleven (!) children - one wonders how he found the time to paint. Indeed, Vermeer did not produce a great number of works, but may have enjoyed some fame and popularity in his lifetime. His style certainly influenced other artists and is still much-loved today. "
