Here, let me help you:

As far as movies go, borrow from a friend - I'm a huge movie buff, and that's what I do. I've seen about 10 movies this month thanks to friends with DVDs.
As far as the rest, well...check the job links.
quote: Without money I cannot leave Barrow unless someone else can spring me, like my mom, who sprung me out of here 2 days ago, well not really because my sister had to go and be pregnant and go into false-premature labor and be sent out of the village down to anchorage and now my mom says I should just wait until after my sister gives birth before going to NM with her which could be tomorrow or in two months. (or most likely wont happen, since its all code speak for "son I dont have the money to send you down here") |
Which is what a job is for...you don't need to work in Barrow as long as you can make enough working and living in Anchorage or Nome or Juneau or elsewhere (as I did in Allston and Boston and Brighton and Newburyport and Peabody, all in Massachusetts).
quote: I cannot whore myself out to the military like I always wanted. I have medical problems that would prevent that, its just always been a dream of mine so I thought that maybe just maybe when I turn 18 it will all be magicaly ok and I wont have any further problems but nooooooo. |
I don't know what your problems are. My problem was obesity, and I worked through that and could have easily joined the military once I lost 85 lbs. If your problem is psychological or genetic, I'm sorry, but if it is something within your control (like obesity, depression, or anxiety), and the military is a good option for you, I suggest you do it - they'll pay for college as you need it.
quote: And no I havent gone to the Doc about it. The hospital up here has a horrible reputation and I wouldnt trust them to correctly diagnose a rash. I do however plan on visiting the doc down in NM, if I ever get there. If it is a fixable problem then maybe I can whore myself out. ( I doubt it though ) |
Guess what: if it isn't possible to get something done in Alaska, get it done elsewhere. And there are organizations that will pay for it. First off, if you can get it through an employer, do it (because there are jobs available all over Alaska). Second, if you can't, there are doctors on the cheap

Get your ****ing driver's license. I don't know how much it costs in Alaska, but it can't be more than what I pay in Massachusetts (which, btw, I got myself without parents.)

I have my GED.
Apparently I have to say this again, I CANNOT GET A JOB UP HERE AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING NON-STOP FOR ALMOST AN ENTIRE YEAR NOW. Without a job I have no money, without money I have no way out of here under my own power. So quit telling me I should get a job.

Because, for all your "get your crap together" talk, you seem to forget he lives in a village of 4500 inhab, including many traditional Eskimos, and whose bond with civilization is air travel. It's far more difficult to find a job (any job) in such an isolated village than in a dense area that is among the richest of the world (Mass.). The links you provided offer no jobs whatsoever within 500 miles (!).
True, he could try to get his crap together on several aspects. He should be making no expenses whatsoever, and progressively gather enough money to go, at least to Anchorage (which, at least, is an actual city). He should try to solve his medical problems, or educate himself with the Net in his abundant spare time.
But the way you treat him is completely off the reality of Barrow. The land there isn't full of opportunity at all. There are simply no jobs (there are no DVD rental shops as well), and the best shot he has to make money is to follow NYE's advice: find some guy who wants wood cut, and don't be afraid of blisters.

These are all very good suggestions, if perhaps not always realistic.
I'm in a similiar sort of situation, although my problem is not that I'm "cut off" from opporunity, employment, and life in the fast lane, but that I don't want any of that, and have cut myself from it volountarily. It's not always easy finding your own way in this day and age, though.
I've actually done a number of things in Oerdin's suggestions - I've started to garden and grow some of my own vegetables. Last year was the first year I had a garden, and so it was mostly a learning process and something to keep me busy. While I didn't get alot of monetary value from it (and I didn't intend to), what I learned will be used to make my garden even more abundant the next year. Of course, I live in a climate with a short growing seasons, and I'm vegetarian. So having a self sustained food source is a long ways off But it saves a few dollars, gives me enjoyment, and teache sme alot.
I've also done a good deal of volounteer work at the local Art Gallery, leading to me geting paid for the occasional few weeks of work when there's an installation or event and alot of extra help is needed. It's also opened alot of opportunities to experience new things - I get to meet visiting artists, go to their workshops, and just meet alot of new people in general. Aswell as alot of diverse job experience.
I've learned to play the Harmonica. Not with the intent of joining a band or making money off it, but it's fun, cheap, and stimulating entertainment.
I've thought about the "missionary" work - only in my case it'd be environemental work. Planting trees in Africa, or shoveling baboon **** in taiwan or something. I'm not really ready for such a thing right now, though.
Becoming a "house husband" is something I dream of, but is not really somethign I have control over.
And my latest project is to learn pottery. Thanks to the connections I've made through the art gallery, I've gotten to know a few potters. I've taken a workshop, gotten some pointers from a friend, made an investment of buying 40kgs of clay and some tools (for only $60 or so) and am already having fun hand building and learning to work the clay. I also know someone who has a pottery wheel collecting dust, and they're willing to let me use it - hopefully I'll get ahold of that soon and I can work my way towards making more 'sellable' pieces.
I never did go through with geting my GED, though. I was really motivated for a while there... and was even thinking about working my way to university and such but kind of lost interest in it when I realised that I'd just be selling myself out and not really doing what I *want* if I go down that path (I'm not adverse to university in itself, but there really isnt a whole lot of studies avaiable that interest me, and I'm not really interesting in having a "real job" anyways - I'd probably just end up geting a dimploma in folklore&mythology or some crap). While having a GED wouldn't hurt, I just sort of put it on the back burner and forgot about it. But I've also been considering going to a credited Art School near here, which would be just as good for all intents and purposes, I think. This whole art thing is a bit new to me though, so I have to work on that a bit first before I'd be comfortable making that move.
