I decided to watch the show after all the talk here and the background info discussed here was a good launch pad.
The show was ok with some good scenes, but 1 thing puzzled me. Jack needed to delay the terrorist to give time for the satellite to track him. So he... holds up the gas station??? Granted he had to think quick, but wouldn't it have been easier and safer to have only car-jacked the terrorist instead (which he did later anyways) or even do something less drastic (flat tire, etc)?
Or was that whole extremity typical of Jack's style? Someone who acts before he thinks and puts more people in danger than necessary, but succeeds nonetheless.
I know the terrorists need the Sec. of Defense alive, but I wasn't buying the whole attempted escape scene either. If the daughter who knows of her's father's medical condition cannot help her father, I don't see why a lone guard would leave his position and go in the cell to attempt to play nurse.

1. robbery was typical. Impulsive Jack, usuallly gets good results, sometimes not, the writers are in danger of making him omniscient.
2. the lone guard doesn't know the medical condition of the guy, so he HAD to check it out, as if Heller died while he was there, before the trial, the guard would probably be killed, wouldn't cha think?

I think the robbery was way overboard. It was a "jump the shark" moment for me. Jack commits a major crime, taking innocent people hostage including a cop! Jack put everything in jeopardy. One single bad move and the bad guy would have gotten away or Jack would have gotten caught or shot by the cops outside. Even as it is now, Jack should be locked up in prison for 20-30 years. Armed robbery with hostages is a serious crime.

You are right. But "good guy feigns health problem so that lone guard checks him out" is rather cliche, don't you think?

Knife the tire also can to my mind. But even worse, he had the guys cell phone, dumping it would probably have given them all the info they needed. It's the first thing they do on every other crime show so it's not that obscure. |
Knifing the tire could have tipped off the bad guy that someone was following him and caused him to go to an alternate location. But it was still a good option IMO. And the truth is that there was nothing that bad with bringing the guy in for interrogation. Questioning the guy + the cell phone would probably give CTU some good info to find Heller. If they used the drug or the sensory deprivation on the terrorist dude, I am sure they could extract info. Instead, they are using the extreme techniques on some hippie kid who probably doesn't know anything.
Sure, following the guy to Heller is the fastest way to save the SecDef but it is also the most dangerous and risky. Bringing the guy in for questioning would take more time but it probably save the SecDef too.
Let's not forget that Jack's girlfriend is also hostage. And he admitted to falling in love with her. Jack is probably going over the top because he is so desperate to find her. He does not want to lose her like he lost his wife. I think if the show says that this is his motivation, it would make the actions we've seen more believable.

Perhaps, but they would probably do worse to him if Heller escaped.
If the daughter who knows of her father's medical condition cannot save him, why would the guard be able to prevent him from dying and still successfully keep the daughter in check by going in the cell?
Why didn't he inform others what was happening so someone else could guard while he played magic healer?
Well, I guess just chalk it up to a stupid guard grunt.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

I attributed that to his "not think before you act" reckless style I mentioned earlier. I didn't know he wasn't that sloppy in earlier episodes.
And Jack tells the terrorist he was really after the $18k in the armored truck, but he made it clear to everyone earlier he didn't know when it would arrive. So he's pretending to be a robber who holds up a gas station to rob an armored truck... with an arrival time (2hrs later in this case) he doesn't know at all?
quote: AND more humorous. THE standard CTU kit in the back of the truck has a SKI MASK but not a simple tracer that he could have attached to the guys car. |
Having not seen prior episodes I assumed he stole the SUV he was driving, perhaps from a terrorist.
quote: AND WHY DID HE TAKE OFF HIS MASK DURING THE ROBBERY? |
I had the channel flipped during that part & assumed I just missed the reason.

yup, I completely agree with the weak writing problem. some good as mentioned the iranian family, some very very bad, the whole stick up. I don't think having him do borderline insane things is the way to shock us. At least show us that there is no other way, this just seems all impulsive.

The terrorist would have likely stolen anther car. Look at what he did when Jack droped him off after the fake robbery. If he would have done that first he would not know what car he was in, and he would have no way of tracking him since he had to wait for the satlite to come into view.

I did not see any cars on that road that Jack could change into. Besides by looking at the commericals for next week he gets the police to free him in time to get to the base that the terrorist are holding the Sec of Def.
The point about the tracker is a good one, and he could have avoid the whole stuation of robbery.
I think he took the mask off because he did not care if people saw his face. It is not like he going to get arrested and can easily get the police to drop any charges.

The problem with taking him in is that if the terrorist found out that he was cought they would know it would only be a matter of time before he would break and tell CTU the location of the Sec of Def. Also it is fast to let him lead them to the location, it could take a long time to take him in for questioning and break him. And by the time they break him and Sec of Def could already be dead.

Changing a tire only takes 15 minutes. He's not an old lady. Why risk possibly having the local police after him over a car-jacking that may or may not work to save 15minutes?
And it's not like a flat tire or hold up the whole gas station were the only options.

It sure didn't take long for the terrorist on foot to find a new vehicle on that road.

Yes, that's convenient.

So if you were one of the hostages (like the terrorist) wouldn't you wonder why a robber doesn't care if people (who he lets live) see his face when he came with means to prevent it? Why even bring the mask in the 1st place?
