Why is it that some people only value teh latest and teh fastest technology available? Isnt it more important how the stuff is designed and knit together? I mean I would rather have a slower but still damn fast, reliable and good looking Mac with awesome OS over a ready-to-blow-up-anytime overclocked Win XP PC with all the fastest memory etc wich by the way eats a lot more electricity as well. If I had enough money I'd much rather pay for combination of overall quality, aesthetics, reliability than OMFG!!11 Radeon X800 with 6000 MB and P 5 4.9 Ghz and Win XP accopanied by a horrible looking and sounding "ATX Tower"

Not at all. At the time I needed the best laptop available... It has been reliable, damn fast and good looking with hardware that still isnt found in 90% of the state-of-the-art laptops

Tell me, wich one is more important to you: Play the latest FPs smoothly on your PC or actually doing something creative?

Got spare money?

Dells are never the best laptops available. They're cheapily built with cheap components.

And I do both with my PC.

My PC is a gaming center, a workstation (development, 3D rendering, etc), and a media center (PVR software, DivX encoding, massive media library, etc).

Very well, thats your philosophy. You know some people, like Japanese for instance have for ages used PCs purely for business/academic purpose and have played games with consoles. Why is it so hard for you to accept this different approach? Theres more than just the Ein Way, Meine Way

I can understand people with basic needs, but there are much cheaper computers that do that.

If you're not using the computer to do much of anything, why pay for something still overpriced? That, I don't get.

Not much of anything!? Oh come on, you know most business/academic applications require a fraction of todays standard computing power.

Cant you see computer as part of interior decoration? You dont buy awful lamp just because it illuminates well do you? You dont buy awful looking couch just because its cheap do you? Most PCs look like a total puke, given the fact that they might be cheaper and marginally faster.

Apple just has a different philosophy and approach to computing than a standart wintel geek. Money isnt everything, speed isnt everything. HL2 and Doom3 are just stunts that keep us PC lovers paying high prices to get marginally faster componenets. Much of the speed is illusion anyway. Accept it and try to learn from it.

As I said, the people who buy Macs buy them as household decorations.

The same kind of people who buy the New Beetle.

Asher: You mean your Antec sonata piano ?

Some people think everything you have visible in your household is a piece of the interior decoration. That said I'd be more than happy to have a Mac in my living room than a regular ATX. Design wise it probably would be a good investment too. I wouldnt have to worry about my Macs HL2 compatibility because there was none to begin with. And thts just fine with me. I would just turn on my Xbox2 and play it on that. With an LCD-projector of course

Quadrupling is really easy to do when you have very small profits.

They made $63M last year at this quarter.

Apparently, it's not even possible to assemble something similar to the Mini out of standard PC parts available around here at the moment (unless one resorts to a mini or nano ITX case with an amazingly slow VIA processor and no optical drive, not really an option), which raises its shares in my eyes.
The irritating part is that the Apple folks haven't seemingly even considered this option by making their display adapter unchangable (which means that I'll have to resort to some external FireWire tuner card, were I to make such a box).

No if I buy it to make the living room more nicely looking.
Yes if I buy it to be able to read my book in optimal conditions.

Then again, if I want to improve to look of said living room, I'll buy a pretty painting or antique piece of furniture, not a 'puter...

Make your own iPod Shuffle
January 12, 2005, 2:18 PM PST

Apple is selling iPod Shuffles as fast as it can uncrate them, but not everybody is thrilled with the new $99 MP3 player, which skips previous iPod niceties such as a display.

Web wag "Mhusson" has posted a pictorial tutorial for turning your old hard drive iPod into the functional equivalent of the new Shuffle. Make sure you have a PostIt note ready.

As far as we can tell, however, the instructions neglect the critical Step 4 to match the Shuffle's wee bit of storage capacity: Delete the first 2,000 songs on your device.

Also in the not-impressed camp is Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Singapore's Creative Technologies, whose Zen Micro MP3 player has stolen a little thunder from the iPod Mini in recent months.

Hoo told business publication Channel News Asia that the iPod Shuffle reminds him of the MP3 players Creative was selling four years ago.

"I think the whole industry will just laugh at it," he said. "It's worse than the cheapest Chinese player. Even the cheap, cheap Chinese brand today has display and has FM...I think it's a non-starter to begin with."

I'd say he's scared shitless. Creative sells well in Asia, but is owned elsewhere - mainly due to it's being crappy imitations of Apple's stuff.

And Asher is the odd one out. Paul Thurrott and John Dvorak, notorious mac haters, have been upbeat on Apple's new stuff.

Why would he be scared shitless, seeing as Creative's sales are at record levels?

With new products like the Zen Micro and Zen Micro Photo, I think they'll do very well for themselves -- in addition to the far more practical and user-friendly MuVo line compared to the Shuffle...

Part of the reason the iPod is doing so well is the high price. It becomes a pseudo-status symbol.

Using a display-less tiny bubble-gum sized player is no status symbol. It screams "I couldn't afford the real thing".

Not only does it lack the iPod's status-symbol attribute, it lacks user friendliness and practicality.

Creative's Zen Micro is an iPod Mini killer with better looking colors, a cool slider controller, better battery life and storage capacity, FM radio playback and recording, and a voice recorder. And we had fun watching Creative sell the Zen Micro to the "norms." We don't usually sit through booth demos, but the girls with the Zen Micro holsters caught our attention and, well, you know. So we sat through the demo. We found it amazing to hear Zen's sell job, which was a combination of product name repetition and constant comparisons to the underpowered iPod Mini. Pretty effective, we thought, minutes before we purchased two units. No, not really.

What you think is irrelevant, as you're insane.

Creative's HD products are inferior, hideous, knock-offs of Apple's stuff that come with crap software. Their flash players will soon be marginalized by Apple's cheaper flash ipod.

Enough for uncool people like you, with no sense of style or design, but not for most folks.

All software I've seen bundled with players is usually bad. iTunes is no exception. While I don't like the Creative software, at least it doesn't hijack my system with 3 useless processes and increased boot time, in addition to a ridiculously large interface and poor multiformat support...
