I've only bought one CD this week - "Nkalakatha" by Mandoza, the first album of Kwaito I've ever bought and I'm quite happy with it.

I've borrowed a whole bunch of CDs from the public library though, from the Bullitt sountrack to a compo of African Disco tracks from the seventies, via Richard Hell, Atari Teenage Riot and Can.

I love the 'Bullitt' soundtrack. Even if the film were crap (which it ain't) that would be a good reason to have it.

Lalo Schiffrin: the man.

Can I've always liked- especially 'Soon Over Babaluma' and 'Ege Bamyasi'.

I haven't been listening to much...

A bit of:
Soulwax - Any Minute Now

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - bits and pieces of their last 3 albums. Their last one isn't quite as good as their earlier ones.

Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, borrowed from my sister. I had expected I'd like The Love Below best. Then when I first skipped through it, Speakerboxxx seemed to be better, but I think I've settled on The Love Below now after all... I'm not sure if it's quite good enough for me to consider buying though.

At the moment I'm listening to:
Dälek - Absence - Some pretty wicked "heavy" rap (no I don't think that's a proper genre name, just how it feels to me). I'm liking it.

Spookily serendipitous, Lazzy.

I listened to Jaz Coleman and Anne Dudley's 'Songs from the Victorious City' yesterday and thought back fondly to nights at Eighties discos listening to 'Release the Bats' and 'Requiem' and 'Follow the Leader'.

Also went back in time with Pulp, and listened to 'Common People' and 'Do You Remember the First Time?' and the Verve's 'Bitter Sweet Symphony'.

Then I just fancied some noise, so I put on Cabaret Voltaire's 'This is Entertainment' with the bass up high and Suicide's 'Live in Berlin'.

Tired of ads?

I have finally screened and went through all my new songs. . I had a few hundred new songs I had to check to make sure they were good copies and/or if I actually liked them. I like to experiment with different bands and such. The ones I didn't like I deleted. I tried Lacuna Coil, I just couldn't get into their music. It didn't draw me in.

Sorry, the whole Goth thing is just daft. Either you realize it's a joke, or there's something really wrong. At least Fields are aware of how silly the whole thing is (hence their ripping off Ennio Morricone).

Goths are like drama students - in fact they are often drama students. What harsher indictment could there be?

Suffering from ads?

Today I was at Skärholmen market (which is the place in Stockholm to buy cheap, second-rate pirate copies of middle eastern music from questionable vendors). There I purchased for way too much money a CD of my Turkpop favourite Ebru Gündes (who has a hell of a voice despite looking somewhat like Kylie) and a compilation of recent Arabic pop music. Both are good, though the latter only has ten tracks which feels like a bit of a rip-off. Plus the track listings are all in arabic which makes it a bit hard to follow.

You weren't there. You wouldn't understand.

The trailblazers- The Banshees, Birthday Party, Killing Joke- made astonishingly ferocious and deadly serious noise.

Then the kiddy bands like The Sisters, The Mission, Fields of the Naff discovered backcombing and turned it all into a turgid joke. There is no comparison. It's like saying Punk is a joke on the strength of hearing Busted and Blink 182.

This is the good stuff-

The Birthday Party- "Dead Joe"
The Birthday Party- "Release the bats"
Killing Joke- "Psyche"
Killing Joke- "Love like blood"
Killing Joke- "Exorcism"
Killing Joke- "The death and resurrection show"
Nick Cave- "The Mercy Seat"
The Gun Club- "Ghost on the highway"
Bauhaus- "In the flat field"

Get them down your neck and tell me it's a joke. It's bulging eyes and bulging veins all the way, not Amateur-dramatics posing.
