RIP, old buddy. One summer in Finland, I read a few of his plays all at once - what a trip that was. Then I read some Oscar Wilde plays. That was a good Summer.

Tonight, old guy, I'm raising a glass to you.

Death of A Principled American.

Here's to you Mr. Miller, a big thank you for 'The Crucible' and 'Death of a Salesman' and 'A View From the Bridge' and 'All My Sons'.

I think there's one or two still living.

It's hardly Miller's most notable achievement though. He wasn't Mr. Monroe.

A pity that the most frequent memorials to her these days are 200lb transvestite lookalikes.

At least I acknowledge she was more than a pulchritudinous body and beautiful (if surgically assisted) face.

Intelligent, good looking and a good actress- an admirable foil for an intelligent principled playwright.

molly bloom,

How does the fact that she was intelligence (that's actually new to me), dispute the fact that she was so frickin' hot?!

So do I. There were breasts attached to the pulchritudinous body.

Seriously, it's the personality with her. It always is for me with women.

It doesn't. But she was indeed very intelligent, and it means there was rather more to her than just a 'nice rack'.

I'll give you an example from my partner's experience- at the Gliding Club, a very good looking woman turned up, young, ripe and full of joie de vivre, with an ample bosom too.

Now most of the males there talked to her breasts when they talked to her. Except for my partner, who addressed her as if she were what she was, another well-qualified glider pilot.

It was at that point that some of the other males realized that Rhys was a big gay homo.

Because obviously only a big gay homo would treat her as though she were a person, not just mammary glands with a head attached.

Well Marilyn Monroe was definitely not just a 'nice rack.' She had it all. Like Agathon said, her personality was what seperated here from those women who just have nice boobs, or some other lovely physical attributes.

Which I believe was my original point, except that people may have perfectly pleasant personalities, and yet not be talented actresses and intelligent too.

I believe we're mostly in agreement, except that I place more emphasis on her achievements in the cinema and as an intelligent (not just personable and good looking) woman.

But if she doesn't have a nice rack, then who cares?

True, but then physical attraction probably has little to do with the persons achievements, at least not for heterosexual men. A lot of men do just care about the boobs, but that's pretty dumb.

I once introduced a women to a friend of mine. He asked me what she was like. I didn't really know her very well at all, so I could only tell him about her physical attributes. So I said, "well she has big boobs." His eyes lit up. He ended up marrying her, but she is a total *****. He's very unhappy.

By today's standards she'd be considered to be too fat and wouldn't stand a chance to ever "make" it.

I think that says more about today's standards than it does about Marilyn.

And I think it's also a bit amusing that while most people did remember to also praise Miller's work, half the posts so far have been more concerned with Marilyn.

Including this one. We may inadvertently have given the answer to which of his to major fields of achievement was the most impressive.
