It's actually gonna take pretty much the rest of the season for her to make a full recovery (though of course she won't be spending all that time in a hospital bed)

This is the first Sci fi show that has had me exited in a long time as far as quality writing. Finally someone figured out that special effects are cool and all but story lines are essential. That and I'm digging the pace of the show.

Che: Im resisting the urge to look ahead. I want to be surprised. Hope I can make it. I'm definitly getting the DVD of the season when it comes out later

I've been reading the sci fi channel boards and the old school BG fans are still foaming at the mouth at all the changes and I can't for the life of me understand how they think the original was better than the new one. Now there are a few things that bother me about the new one but those problems don't center around starbuck being a female or the omission of some characters. But for the old school fans its like the creators and writers of the new show came in and raped their sisters and mother. The constant feeling I had with watching the original show was a feeling of disappoinment. It had such a cool premise (itself borrowed from many other ideas) but always failed to live up to expectations. Different strokes I suppose.

I don't particularly object to the changes in the new series but I guess I just don't see many of them as being too relevant.
A big deal has been made about Starbuck in particular being female - supposedly from the precept of modernizing the original show to modern standards.
Realistically though the original was ahead of its time anyway - Athena was a qualified shuttle pilot and flew them in combat situations much like the new Boomer, and after the original introduced Sheba, a few episodes in, they had a female fighter pilot as a major character as well.

It just seems a bit contrived, similar to the first episode of Voyager from memory ... I had no objection to introducing female starship captains or multi-ethnic vulcans but why the heck did the flippin' writers have to take such great pains to point it out in the dialogue?

Shades of some of those old batman reruns with the sidekick being lectured on traffic safety and buckling seatbelts ...

SciFi struck a deal with the British Sky Channel: in exchange for giving them premiere rights, Sky would chip in on the production costs. SciFi couldn't/wouldn't afford those on its own.

IMNSHO some people just seem to enjoy b*tching and moaning for the sake of it. You'll find such people for any tv show that runs longer than 2-3 seasons...

Don't get me wrong, I can see how some people might not like this show (different strokes indeed), but it's ridiculous to make a big deal out of characters undergoing a gender change or being added/left out, etc.

quote:

Ron Moore (the creative genius behind the show) has said that the main reason for making some characters female is to add more tension to the show, specifically more tensions between the characters. In spite of maybe being somewhat ahead of its time, the original show was still very much male-dominated, making it impossible to add (intimate) relationships as an integral part of the show (unless they would be homosexual in nature, but that's still a bit too far ahead of our time for an American audience). And (potential) relationships are a key component of the new show: Baltar-Six, Starbuck-Zack, Starbuck-Apollo, Boomer-Tyrol, Boomer-Helo, Dualla-Billy, etc (there are others but if you're looking for spoilers you're not getting them from me )

Re: Plot questions Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I downloaded all the episodes over Bittorrent (no TV), and my conclusion after seeing 1x13 was that it took some big steel balls to leave an ending like that without having the second season confirmed.

Even if he got on a ship, he wouldn't know how to get back to the fleet. In addition, why use up Cylon plants within the fleet on suicide bombing missions? They should just figure out a way to notify the Cylons of their location. Constant attacks were coing pretty close to destroying the fleet in that first episode. Just keep it up.

You're assuming that the Cylons want to destroy the humans. Every single thing that the Cylons do has a very specific purpose, though we don't know what that purpose is. They almost never make mistakes, though some of their deliberate actions seem like mistakes. A good example is episode 7, which is rife with extremely subtle Cylon manipulations (and is a fun episode, to boot, plus Number Six gets naked).

Interestingly, Ron Moore also produced Star Treks DS9 and TNG, and wrote a few dozen episodes for those shows. He also wrote First Contact and Generations (solely, if you exclude the Wonder Twins' contributions). It's nifty to see his genre material outside of the Star Trek universe. He also did G vs. E, but nobody except me cares about that.

Well, you could download them, if you have a decent net connection. Since Supernova went down around Christmas, you may have some trouble finding the earlier episodes on BitTorrent, but I'm guessing they should be available through Emule, Kazaa, etc as well by now (though possibly not in the same quality that BT offers).

Apparently there will be 20 episodes next season instead of 13. I'm hoping this is as sign that they had so much planned that they needed extra episodes and chose not to rush it.

I thought the Starbuck-marooned-on-the-planet episode was the weakest so far, but still wasn't bad. I've heard many consider it the weakest of the entire season, so that's a good sign!

The last episode was very good, although the over-zealous sergeant was a bit ham-handed in execution. Her stridency was just too shrill to be convincing. I wish they had established her character a bit more in previous episodes to make that pay off better. That, and they should have found a better actress.

But 20 episodes next season? W00t!

I wasn't too keen on the actress either. It seemed like the character was out for more than finding out who was responsible, almost like there were some things left out of previous episodes. Perhaps she was pissed that Tyrol may have been tring to shift the blame more to here about the missing explosives but there just seemed to be some hostility that wasn't explained good enough.

I think she was just pissed off because nobody ever listens to her. She seemed pretty shocked when she was allowed to carry out her investigation.

They were character development that was important along the way, sometimes; and a complete waste of space in others. They were the slower episodes.

B5 was still the greatest epic scifi to ever hit TV.

If you ignore the poor special effects, the lame writing and directing, the bad acting, and everything else except for the story. And those are surprisingly easy to ignore; the story manages to pull everything else up to make it the best SF series ever (if you discount Firefly, and probably BSG in a season or two).
