SciFi struck a deal with the British Sky Channel: in exchange for giving them premiere rights, Sky would chip in on the production costs. SciFi couldn't/wouldn't afford those on its own.

I've been reading the sci fi channel boards and the old school BG fans are still foaming at the mouth at all the changes and I can't for the life of me understand how they think the original was better than the new one. |
IMNSHO some people just seem to enjoy b*tching and moaning for the sake of it. You'll find such people for any tv show that runs longer than 2-3 seasons...
Don't get me wrong, I can see how some people might not like this show (different strokes indeed), but it's ridiculous to make a big deal out of characters undergoing a gender change or being added/left out, etc.

Ron Moore (the creative genius behind the show) has said that the main reason for making some characters female is to add more tension to the show, specifically more tensions between the characters. In spite of maybe being somewhat ahead of its time, the original show was still very much male-dominated, making it impossible to add (intimate) relationships as an integral part of the show (unless they would be homosexual in nature, but that's still a bit too far ahead of our time for an American audience). And (potential) relationships are a key component of the new show: Baltar-Six, Starbuck-Zack, Starbuck-Apollo, Boomer-Tyrol, Boomer-Helo, Dualla-Billy, etc (there are others but if you're looking for spoilers you're not getting them from me )

I downloaded all the episodes over Bittorrent (no TV), and my conclusion after seeing 1x13 was that it took some big steel balls to leave an ending like that without having the second season confirmed.

The series depicts the Cylons to be at an overwhelming advantage. Why do they bother with subterfuge? The whole plot line on Caprica makes no sense? Why bother trying to fool that one guy? Even if he got on a ship, he wouldn't know how to get back to the fleet. In addition, why use up Cylon plants within the fleet on suicide bombing missions? They should just figure out a way to notify the Cylons of their location. Constant attacks were coing pretty close to destroying the fleet in that first episode. Just keep it up. |
You're assuming that the Cylons want to destroy the humans. Every single thing that the Cylons do has a very specific purpose, though we don't know what that purpose is. They almost never make mistakes, though some of their deliberate actions seem like mistakes. A good example is episode 7, which is rife with extremely subtle Cylon manipulations (and is a fun episode, to boot, plus Number Six gets naked).
Interestingly, Ron Moore also produced Star Treks DS9 and TNG, and wrote a few dozen episodes for those shows. He also wrote First Contact and Generations (solely, if you exclude the Wonder Twins' contributions). It's nifty to see his genre material outside of the Star Trek universe. He also did G vs. E, but nobody except me cares about that.

I think she was just pissed off because nobody ever listens to her. She seemed pretty shocked when she was allowed to carry out her investigation.

If you ignore the poor special effects, the lame writing and directing, the bad acting, and everything else except for the story. And those are surprisingly easy to ignore; the story manages to pull everything else up to make it the best SF series ever (if you discount Firefly, and probably BSG in a season or two).
