I just find it difficult to make such a bold statement like that. It's too inclusive. I've yet to meet any racist Japanese people, so to say that they all are seems rude. Yes, I've heard a lot of people relate different experiences. There may be a lot of racists in Japan, but I'm not going to treat the Japanese people I meet any differently because of that. I've met quite a few racist people here in China, but I won't say that all Chinese are racists nor do I expect strangers on the street here to hate me because I'm white.

One of the teachers here sent a photograph after being hired so that they could prepare his expert certificate and such. Despite being very white, the photograph came out dark skinned. The school was very nervous and even sent him a message asking him to confirm that he wasn't black.

However, larger schools like Zhejiang University hired a much more racially diverse staff.

One of my American buddies left Shanghai to live in Hokkaido, Japan for a year, He just returned to China, one of his main reasons was he was so sick of racism in Japan, after being treated so well in China.

Where he lived in Japan (a smaller city), some bars, bathhouses, restaurants and the like had signs proclaiming "No Foreigners." He asked some businesses for explanations, usually they complained about drunken, rowdy Russian sailors making trouble.

That only happens in Hokkaido and a couple other prefectures in the far north. It is because of Russian sailors causing trouble.

The Japanese are pretty good about racism by East Asian standards, from what I've seen and heard. I would certainly be surprised to find out that parents here didn't want their children taught by a black person, nor have I ever heard a Japanese person say they hate Koreans or Chinese people...

I'm not so sure about attitudes in the extremes of the countryside, I suppose it doesn't matter much. Peasants stare in slack-jawed wonder at foreigners of any color. Is there much of that in the most remote rural parts of SK?

Ah ok, in Korea it depends what kind of foreigner you are, personally I've always been treated very well and there are definately some clubs that unofficially ban foreigners (ie foreigners always get told that its a "member only" club).
I haven't heard of any such clubs in Shanghai, but then ... this is Shanghai. You may know that some Chinese strongly dislike Shanghainese, criticizing them, among other things, as being western yuppy wannabes, better accepting of foreigners than they are of their rural compatriots.

I was surprised to hear that Kiwis and Ozzies might be paid less in South Korea! Do Brits get paid extra? Surely those from southern Ireland get some sort of bonus as well?

My girlfriend told me that when her mother was extremely happy when she found out that her daughter was dating a white man. Apparently white men are said to treat their woman far better than Japanese men. Her mother may be biased though, considering she's a Shanghainese woman living in Japan.

Interestingly enough, the girlfriend does stereotype the Chinese, despite being 3/4ths Chinese and a fluent Shanghainese and Mandarin speaker. She claims that most Chinese people are stingy and will do anything to make money. I guess some stereotypes cross national boundries despite cultural roots.

I think it's natural to stereotype on one's own population. I knew a Chinese guy (very very proud of being Chinese) who said basically the same, but without a hint of criticism about it. At hearing him, it seemed like urban China was swept by a wave of hysterical money-grabbing. Actually, I think it's not that far from the truth.

It's true. A lot of people are going about this unscrupulously, making counterfeits and even "fake" items. Not that long ago they found a factory making soy source by dissolving human hair in chemicals ::vomit::

Another case from 2003 (IIRC). The owner of an eatery poisoned the food of a neighbouring store, after losing out in the competition, killing a whole bunch of innocent bystanders.

In contrast, there are many generous Chinese, at least to me. My neighbor often invites me over for meals. Even when I have lunch with my students, I have to fight with them to prevent them from paying for me. In fact, arguing over wanting to pay is often consideres polite here.

But there is strong stereotype of greedy Chinese. When I teach my class on stereotypes, I ask my students what are some stereotypes of Chinese people. After going through all the "smart", "hardworking", "good-lookng" responses , I ask if there are any negative stereotypes. Usually the room is quiet at this point. So I pull a coin out of my pocket and squeeze it between two fingers. Then I explain what pennypinching means, and they begin to nod in agreement.

Most Chinese people ... stingy?? C'mon, were did she get a crazy idea like that?

One of my Chinese friends was complaining to me about his aunts and uncles. My friend said their decision whether or not to visit their poor, aging parents was based on the savings they could realize by eating lunch and dinner at the folk's table. However politeness requires they must bring a gift, so they would show up with something like a couple of eggs. One of the uncles in question was a well-off doctor.

Chinese have a particular penchant for being willing to go far beyond what westerners would consider "petty" to pinch a penny, or even better ... cheat someone out of a penny (which is actually considered admirable behavior by some). For instance, consider the effort-to-reward ratio of making fake eggs.

Sure, poor people everywhere do what they can, but Chinese show a special zeal for it that seems unique to their culture, along with, unfortunately, complete disregard for the consequences - no matter how serious - to strangers. Example: deliberately injecting fruit with contaminated water to pump up the weight (and selling price).

UR's example of the snackfood poisoner was a good one. Recalling details from memory, in 2003 a Nanjing breakfast snack street vendor was envious of the neighboring breakfast snack street vendor's success. Now, in most places, a guy in this position would consider changing his product, his location, his advertising or some such. Not in China. Here, the answer might be: score some industrial-grade rat poison so strong it's even illegal in China and lace the competition's food with it. Yeah, great way to boost sales and put a couple of extra renminbi in your pocket.

About forty people died, many on the spot, more than half children. Witnesses claimed some fell to the ground in convulsions after only a bite or two. This was as extreme (but not wildly uncommon) example of everyday, commonplace behavior.

A more recent noteworthy example was the fake baby food scandal that was publicized last year. In a rural region, a company manufactured fake baby food, resulting in - surprise! - a spate of undersized, malnourished, mentally retarded children. Perhaps the scariest part of the story was that they weren't the only company doing it, just the most successful.

But, hey, the company's profits were up. Who cares about some brain-damaged babies when there is money to be made!

As DaShi pointed out, individual Chinese can be very, very generous ... to people they know. If you are a stranger, forget it. You don't even exist.

Wow, doesn't sound like Korea at all. Real kind of potlatch kind of society here. You get the same kind of fighting over who pays the bill but sometimes it goes so far as having people grab the bill and then sprint for the cashier so they can pay for the bill before anyone else

You get people being incredibly generous on a regular basis, and all those old farmer types in the country. Well at least in the case of my fiance's grandmother they don't get given eggs by their relatives they get given the biggest screen TV that I've ever seen in a private resisdence (and cash).

Same goes with Korean wedding, there's always a table set up for people to give cash to the groom and it would be unheard of for friends or family not to stuff quite a bit into the envelopes.

I guess most of the difference is made up by people having smaller living spaces, cheaper/smaller cars and living cheap when no guests are around.

I enjoy it since I'm a naturally generous person and it's nice to live in a country where people don't try to take advantage of that.

In China, wedding gifts are placed under a no gain philosophy. At least, that is how it is explained to me. You give money under the assumption that you will get the same amount back during your wedding. This was explained when I tried to give money to a Chinese friend during her wedding last year. She said that as a foreigner, I shouldn't because she wouldn't have the opportunity to repay under this system. I insisted anyway as I would feel insulted if she refused my gift. Another Chinese friend who was also married last year eagerly accepted the money, but I've always believed her to be a living stereotype. :bleh:

True, it's worse in cities, but I think that's only because urban residents have more and greater possibilities of cheating people.

In cities, developers working with corrupt city officials routinely cheat entire neighborhoods out of their homes (as is happening in every city across China).

On the other hand, rural people, with their limited means, have to confine themselves to making fake eggs, buying and selling children, and other charming cottage industries. For the same reason they are more likely to be on the receiving end of abuse. In other words, it's not for lack of desire, more from lack of means.

Sadly, I have heard far too many tales of rural folks theiving and cheating and horribly mistreating others to think they are much different than city folks.

I have an excellent book called 'Pink Samurai' . I'm sure you'd love to read it.

Also some little saki beakers with the usual erotic images of (female, alas) courtesans biting things and breast falling out of yukatas.

And there's an old edition of 'In Touch' knocking about somewhere with an article on and illustrations by Sadao Hasegawa.

And apparently Kristen Bjorn has released his first porn film with a Japanese actor. Can't remember his name though....

Japan has the market cornered on weapons-grade East Asian gay porn. However, competition is always a good thing.

By the way, does anyone remember that Japanese ball player () who joined the US team, only to have word get out that he had appeared in a gay Japanese porn film?

Well, I stumbled across the film (quite by accident, of course, whilst conducting academic research, ahem). First, he really is a very attractive guy, especially without his baseball uniform. Second, if he really is hetero as claimed, he deserves some sort of award for an incredibly convincing and enthusiastic performance encompassing both pitching and catching.

Molly, when are you coming to Shanghai?
