Hell no. From the trailers it looks like an action movie aimed at the same audience as Left Behind and The Passion.

Nah, the movie is pretty sacriligious- true believers will probably hate it- I can just see Mel wanting to burn the theater down.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

You have to know plenty of Christian theology to buy it, but in the end, its not really in any way affirming of Christianity.

Its not a good movie, mind you, but its not horrible.

I saw the previews, and wanted to see it, but I thought it had a high probability of sucking. Based on this thread, though, I'll probably see it, hopefully tomorrow. Expect my full review soon.

Tell me about it. I left the theater with the impression that Heaven and Hell are nothing more than would-be puppetmasters, with humanity being strung along by both entities. To quote Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?!"

When she was about 8 or so, our daughter was invited to a firend's church for Easter services. She came home all excited, and breathlessly related that the church had spent the morning recounting the story of Jesus Christ Superstar. Since then, we've tried to give her a heads-up whenever she's encountering elements of the Christian cosmology. The results are interesting; for example, like a lot of secular children of educated parents, she's actually getting most of her sense of Christianity by going to art museums.

No question, but she'll read them both dammit; I just picked Milton for the whole angels-demons-war-against-heaven angle.

Actually, I can't wait until she reads Milton and finally figures out what Phillip Pullman's been up to...

that's interesting. I just had a thought. Doesn't relate to you, but I'm curious if it happens.

children of relgious families often rebel and become athiests or satanists. I wonder if children of secular families rebel. What do they have to rebel against? Do they become religious just to piss of their parents?

All the actors were fine, and I think Tilda Swinton made a great Gabriel- I liked her scene at the end.

Also, stay throught the entire credits (damned things are LONG) cause they have an extra scene, which I will not give away, unlike some other people

Oh, and I saw this in my neighborhood ghettoplex, and two noisy kids, maybe 11 or so, sat behind me, talking nonsense, but I loved it when one kid tried to have some "intelliegent conversation" by pointing out that given that the movie was about heaven and hell, the name Constantine probably had to do with Emperor Constantine, whom had banned Christianity from Islam, or something (this is what he said).

Which was doubly funny because when my mother first saw the title around, she thought, given all the costume dramas around latetly that it was probably about Emperor Constantine.

so it's not about constantine?

I suspect so. Rebelling in that sense is just becoming what your paerents are not.

My favorite example in this regard is the family of a friend of mine from college. Her parents were thoroughly mainstream: Dad was a self-made man who rose from a working-class background to become a very senior exec at Price-Waterhouse; Mom was upper-middle class old money and the kind of gal Dad would marry to signify that he had "made it." They were Christine-Todd-Whitman Republicans, living in upper crust New Jersey (Bergen County), worshipping an Episcopalian God and sending their kids to prep schools, then Ivies, and then presumedly on to upper-middle-class suburban Episcopalian lives of their own. And the kids?

One became a communist and lives on a collective in Vermont...
One became a born-again Christian and eschewed upward class mobility, becoming a nurse instead...
And my friend? She actually got her MBA and works in an appropriately Capitalist/Satanic field (the business end of pharmaceuticals)...but she still managed to marry a black guy (both her parents are really old-school Southern White).

I think: you have kids, you live in fear.

The critics have not been kind to the film, specially those from bigger outfits, but I think most people who go watch this film aren't interested in anything more than good effects and good actions, as long as the actors don't suck utterly. All the acting is good (for the roles they have to play), the effects are good, and the action is OK, so all in all, people are satisfied.

I want more than special effects. I want a good story. I'm okay if there is no character development in these types of movies, but if the story is crap, the movie is crap.

You'll find him in the Alan Moore run on Swamp Thing which is about twenty years plus old.

I happen to own the first 30 or so...

One of the Hellblazer collections is basically a reprint of the first issues, all of which are excellent IMO.

My favourite is issue #3 which is a pisstake of Thatcher's Britain called 'Yuppies from Hell'...

From what I've seen of the trailers, Hellblazer has basically been raped for an American audience by turning him American and setting him in LA amongst other things, which also means the plot is likely to be pretty dumb too...

Still, the trailer did look pretty impressive and so long as its a decent popcorn actioner I'll be pretty happy...
