Monkey Island 1 2 and 3 is a must try.
The Longest Journey is a must.
Syberia 1 and 2 are ok adventure games.
Space Quest 3 is a real goodie.
Lesiure Suit Larry 1 2 3 and 5 are great for a laugh and some fun.
Any Kings Quest series would be an interesting try.
Grim Fandango is a great adventure.
Loom is quite good.
Sam and Max is a lot of fun.
Full Throttle is a must.
The Dig is also a must.
Zak McKracken and Maniac Mansion are oldies but goodies.

Most of these are point and click with the usual push, pull, walk to, open, etc commands

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

The controls are fine but the simplicity of it make the game unfun.

I prefer text (like space quest) and then monkey island 1 style interface.

Really adds to the adventure.

Best adventure ever: Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

And if you are lucky enough to find The Last Express: buy it! Political intrigue, murder and love on the last trip of the Orient Express before the outbreak of WW 1.

Text commands are almost a must. "Get all" beats walking about at a location and click on every single pixel.

lol I always forget about the get all command. but makes it too easy

Adagio, you will love the other Larry's if 6 and 7 are the only ones you played.

Hueji is right on the nose with Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, it is probably the 3rd best adventure game I can think of. Monkey Island 1 being first and Longest Journey second.

There's also Indiana Jones and the last Crusade, which is also very very good.

Did you play 3 (Curse of Monkey Island)? It's pretty much universally regarded as the best of the series. I certainly think it's easily not only the best Monkey Island game, but the best adventure game I've ever played.

Lotm, also check out, if you can get it cheap, "Titanic: Adventure out of Time." It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool to have the virtual Titanic to walk around, and the adventure itself is engrossing enough for some diversion.

I've played all Monkey Island games. Yes, Monkey Island 3 is extremely good, but Monkey Island 1 holds a special place, because it was my first experience with a strange named game called Monkey Island 1.

I was only about 12. So you see, when MI3 came out, I wasn't exactly curious or interested as I was with MI1.

Monkey Island 1 is also the opening of a great story. So in comparison of time and technology, I would say that Monkey Island 1 still beats Monkey Island 3, but only by an inch.

Well it depends.

In absolute terms Curse may be the best game. However Monkey Island 1 was such a breath of fresh air to the genre, and such an influence on the games to come that it is rightly regarded as the classic, not Curse.

But anyway, for LotM's requirement other games are more appropriate.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Nah, I think Curse is to the MI series as Civ II is to the Civ series. Not the ground-breaker, but the one where everything culminated and "got it right." It improved greatly on the mechanics (not to mention graphics) of the first two. It trumps all the others in terms of gameplay, music, writing and dialogue. The voice acting was also top-notch. So I think Curse is the apex of the series.

Honestly, I enjoyed Escape From Monkey Island as well. It had a good story, it was just the mechanics that were a real bummer. The 3D engine just didn't work the way it should have. That, and the puzzles pushed the limit of obscurity. Without a guide, it's very difficult to beat the game.

puzzles.

see like I found Myst intensely frustrating. Now some folks say the puzzles in Myst arent that hard, but several of them stumped me, so i needed a walkthrough. Part of it was that they seemed so arbitrary, so weird, so unrelated to the plot that i felt unmotivated to figure them out. The other was that to figure them out it seemed like you needed to record lots of info from all around the game, and there was no place in game to do that - and you couldnt play in a window, IIRC, so that meant writing stuff down with pencil and paper. Frankly I got bored, and just used the walkthrough whenever i got stuck. WHen i got to the tree maze, i was so totally frustrated by the camera angles, I just gave up entirely. If i had paid more than $3 Id have been DISAPPOINTED.

I DONT want a game like THAT. IIUC many adventure games are very different, and id like to see what theyre like.

Now that sounds cool. A game thats not set in some fantasy or sci fi world, but in a historical setting, more or less.

Okay then, I officially prohibit you from playing King's Quest 1.

My recommendation of KQ2+ VGA stands, though.
