Stars do not make much, except few female stars, they make good money. The rest, not really. That's why it's quantity over quality.
You look what Rocco Siffredi does, he does 'gonzo porn'. Cheap, and lots of them, and he's one of the most succesful right now as far as sales go. I don't know how the internet porn is doing, the sites that produces their own material. THey might do a little better, the great ones, but on average, I don't know, I have no idea.
Spiffor, well, my words are based on few producers own words, plus what is generally known in the business.
Of course, it varies how actors and actresses get paid, everyone has their own system, but the rule is, no one excepts female superstars makes money on a single film. If you sell about 3000 flicks, then you count how much money you make after the crew has been paid the absolute minimum and it has been edited with absolute minimum, all that ****, plus producing DVDs or VHS tapes what ever it is, after all the costs, plus you have to sell it to the distributor if you are not one yourself, how much do you think they will pay you per flick, I tell you how much, if it's a GREAT movie, i mean a ****ing good one, it will be around 8 to 12 bucks MAXIMUM. Most likely less though. So let's assume you're making a great movie, you get a great deal, 8 bucks per piece, multiply that by the amount you actually sell, then take off all the salaries, all that stuff, costs and expenses.. you are not left with much. That's why you don't build up a huge empire because it is essential to make them cheap, so you make the cut better. Not including few big ones who can afford to make and usually sell a lot.
With bad luck, you'll break just even. But with better luck, you can make money. You can sell it to the cable companies showing late night erotica or porn, so you make a soft version of it too for those purposes. That would usually go for a better price, they pay OK, which means you maybe doubled your winnings. But, then it has to be quality flick, they don't want messy soft porn.
ANyway, there is a reason why there are so many big series, and only few real producers that survive and are famous. It's extremely hard and difficult, but internet can change that a bit since you can make money elsewhere too than direct sells.
