Put an end to popups!

Xbox Live is great, and of the six friends I know with Xbox, 5 of them have Live, and the other would get it, but he is low on cash.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Yeah, I won't be doing XBox Live either. I don't care for playing games online, but no worries, since I enjoy the single player XBox games as well.

I also have an XBox and haven't even thought about getting Live.

It'll have more horsepower in that the PS2 theoretically has more horsepower than the Xbox.

It's not an optimal design for game consoles, and it won't ever reach its theoretical performance. Not even close.

If it's good, I'll buy it. I'm thinking the Xbox2 will own the PS3 in performance, just because its development tools are both mature and familiar to developers, and it's a far more practical design than a Cell-based architecture is for a game console. Cell derives it's power from being massively parallel, and game development is notoriously difficult to make parallel.

Here is another significant issue: the Blu-Ray - HD/DVD battle.

Microsoft is, AFAIK, still sticking with having Xbox2 go with the HD-DVD format, while Sony says PS3 will, upon launch, be a Blu-Ray player.

Blu-Ray will give Sony the advantage as far as how much content could go on a single disc. I don't know how long it will take for this format competition to end and a winner to be declared; probably not before both next-gen consoles launch, but if it seems that Blu-Ray is going to be it, Xbox 2 may get hurt.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

If you had read my thread, you know the one on the same exact subject, you would have read the following:

quote:
Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

7 GB is more than enough room for games. I don't see the point in using Blu-Ray or HD-DVD given that most don't have HD TVs.

I think Sony will just hurt themselves by using a very expensive, untested component in the PS3.

Inflate your Upload Space

I don't think they'll have any problems with the Blu-Ray not working, and they'll absorb any added cost of adding the drive without hesitation if they think it will help guarantee Blu-Ray's dominance.

On top of that, Blu-Ray would probably fit the bill for the PS4 as far as storage capacity.

I don't think it will give the PS3 an advantage for games. Like I said, 7 GB is more than enough room for games. It will give the PS3 an advantage for HD movies. But it's not a big advantage, since most people don't own HD TVs anyway. Btw, Apple is on the Blu-Ray team now.

If the PS3 ships with a Blu-Ray drive, it will
1) Cost a fortune
2) Be problematic "first-gen" hardware

I think Sony will reconsider before shipping.

Not first-gen, NEXT GEN. I can already picture the marketing.

And I still think they'd have the problems worked out.

I am. I think Sony and Nintendo are both going to lose ground to Microsoft. That doesn't mean those two companies won't do something right every once in a while.

Games are already coming out that use 4GB. unless developers get their bloatware tendencies under control, 7GB games aren't far away.

4GB? Surely that's not common? It seems that the price of developing a game for the next-generation of systems is going to skyrocket, because of all the extra content they'll have to create. And that makes everyone very nervous. They could always go procedural like Will Wright. Check the thread on Spore, his new game.

Many games are around the 4GB mark or just below. Thing is the pace of affordable hard drive capacity has risen along with the capacity required.

My first drive was 800MB, and it was MASSIVE. Now I have that 275 times over. It was only 9 years ago as well.

The beta alone for WoW was 2.5 GB (that you had to download )

I'm sure that actual game is 4 GB or more.

Yeah, WoW is a huge game. Btw, it seems that you won't have to install games in Longhorn. Microsoft want to make PC gaming as painless and effortless as console gaming. So pop the disk in your PC and it should work. Dream on, Microsoft!

That's what XNA is about.

It's a custom version of an upcoming Visual Studio that makes game development faster, easier, cheaper...and as a curious sideeffect only works on Xbox and Windows Longhorn.

Once they've elbowed every other player out of the market so that all the hardware applies the standards in the same way, they may be right

I saw the spore thread. It looks great as a concept, but I'm not really a fan of directionless gaming, which his implementation appeared to be. That is the main reason I still love Sim City 2 more than 3 or 4. The scenarios gave you more of a purpose to building the city than pure godlike whim.

that would seem to be the logical direction for PC gaming to go and one tht all parties with a stake in PC gaming would have an incentive to follow.
