I'm sorry Gian. It's never a good feeling when a loved one dies

However, there's usually good to balance out the bad. Back in '94, we had a Grayhound named Legacy that had an inoperable tumor. He was in a lot of pain so we decided to have him put down. Three days later, a woman brought a stray Whippet that she thought was a Grayhound to the dogtrack where my father was Racing Coordinator. Sally's been a great part of our family ever since.

You can replace the dog but not the memories you had with the dog. My dog died of cancer to but that was 10 years ago. I have not replaced her only cause when the die it hurts.

Unfortunately that is an occupational hazard with pets as their lifespans are far shorter than ours - maybe one should avoid having a pet at all if it is ultimately going to cause that much pain?

However you say that your dog died ten years ago but haven't replaced it because it hurt.

It seems to me that the pain of having your pet die outweighed the pleasure you derived from it - otherwise you would have got another one.

Hence the point I made about perhaps not getting one in the first place...

Tired of ads?

I remember the tale past down to me at school about a Prince of Wales and his faithful dog.

I just feel like going over it quickly now as it paints a suitable picture of just how cool dogs are.

So the prince is planning to go out hunting on horseback, but he has to leave his best and most faithful hunting hound at home because its getting old. So the prince tells his hound that he is to look after the princes baby while he is out and protect the child from all harm.

While the prince is out a wolf strays from the woods into the castle and ends up in the room that the baby is in in its craddle and the old hound. Its feeling hungry after a hard winter and wants to eat the baby.

A big fight ensues, the old hound is out matched, but such is his loyalty to his master that he finds the streangth to kill the larger wolf.

The hound drags the carcass of the wolf outside and being a clever dog decides to hide the baby in a cupboard, just in case any of the wolfs friends are around.
Then he collapses in front of the cupboard, his wounds overwhelming him.

The prince comes back from his hunt and alarmed follows a trail of blood to the bedroom. Upon entering the room sees a right mess, and blood everywhere, even over the cradle which is empty.

He cant see his child anywhere, but on the floor covered in blood is his old faithful hound. With a sob he draws his sword, the old dog must be going senile, to eat his son that the hound appeard to love as much as he!

He thrusts with his sword into the old hound, never a more cruel blow had he struck in all his years, but the life of his son needed paying.

The old hound started awake with a howl of pain and a look of confusions on its face as it saw his master with sword in hand. From behind in the cupboard the dogs cry had awoke the baby.

The prince hurls open the door and sees his son is safe, his eyes follow the blood smears and he finds the wolf carcass. Now he can picture what happend.

Rushing back to the side of his faithfull hound he holds him in his arms, sobbing with grief as the old dog breathes his last breath, still with that puzzled and slightly sad look in its eyes.

end of story.(the full version is much better)

That dog was given a real burial in a church in wales, i visited it when i was younger and the story is a true one.

The reason i posted it was that i also lost my dog - my childhood best friend of 14 years.

So Giancarlo, i know exactly how it can feel. And like you i also wasn't around when she did die, and i still feel guilty about that over 10 years later.

But i visit her grave whenever i go home - my dad buried her in this little forest glade that myself and my dog used to hang out in. Its near a river and under some trees. When i first got home after she had been buried, i spent hours moving the biggest rock(its like a menhir!) i could to place on top of her grave(to stop foxes digging her up).

Now when i visit i sit for a while and remember all the good times we had, i know she'll be up there chasing rabbits in some doggy heaven and i'll see her again one day.

So my condolances to you. Animals are innocent, and that vunrability especially in the world of man, always brings out my empathy for them.

Just think of her doing the stuff she loved to do in her doggy heaven, you'll be reunited one day.

Suffering from ads?

Oh, I just remembered something that may help, kinda sorta. It's a children's book called "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant (probably available on Amazon). It's all about what a dog experiences the moment he/she wakes up in Dog Heaven. Obviously schmaltzy, but I wept like a litle kid with a skinned knee when I read it in the bookstore (even though I hadn't had any losses in years). I stole a copy (I used to steal a lot) and wound up giving my copy to a neighbor whose pup was hit by a car. I later bought a copy for my mom and sis when we had to put our family dog to sleep (I stayed with her and made the vet come to our home to do it - so far the most painful thing I've ever had to do). Even if you don't believein Heaven (I don't), there's always the hope of something (there is much more to this universe than we'll probably ever know). It's a silly, almost childish comfort, but sometimes that's all there is. The book is sad and happy at the same time, and it'll hurt like a motherf*cker to read it at first, but it may, in some strange way, help the healing.
