I think the WAY he said it was striking, especially since he was still a US citizen at the time.
quote: a similar episode occurred after the September 11, 2001 terrorism attacks. Here, Fischer gave a broadcast interview to Bombo Radyo, a small public-radio station based in Baguio City in the Philippines. "This is all wonderful news," Fischer said. "I applaud the act. The U.S. and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians, just slaughtering them for years. Robbing them and slaughtering them. Nobody gave a ****. Now it's coming back to the U.S. **** the U.S. I want to see the U.S. wiped out." |

As much as I abhor his views, it seems he is being persecuted, perhaps partly because of those views. Is anyone here suggesting that his opinions on 911 or anytning else is reason to imprison him? And if not, why are you making it the issue? |
The issue, excuse me, is that he intentionally violated an economic sanction, having been clearly briefed and understanding what the result would be if he did so. I have no problem with his actions provided that he is willing to pay the penalty, which is no less than any ordinary person would have to do for breaking a law.

It's against the law to walk, and against the law to talk
Against the law to loaf, against the law to work
Against the law to read, against the law to write
Against the law to be a black, a brown, or white
Everything's against the law
I'm a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It's against the law to eat, against the law to drink
Against the law to worry, against the law to think
Against the law to marry or try to settle down
Against the law to ramble like a bum from town to town
Everything's against the law
I'm a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It's against the law to come, against the law to go
Against the law to ride, against the law to roll
Against the law to hug and against the law to kiss
Against the law to shoot, against the law to miss
Everything's against the law
I'm a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues
It's against the law to gamble, against the law to roam
Against the law to organize or try to build a home
Against the law to sing, it's against the law to dance
Against the law to tell you all the trouble on my hands
Everything in Winston-Salem is against the law
I'm a low-pay daddy singing the high-price blues |
Throwing people in jail for playing chess (or for accepting money for playing chess) is ridiculous.
Would it be possible for a judge to dismiss this case as frivolous should Fischer be arrested?

based on his past and current anctics there is a pretty good chance that Mr. Fischer suffers from a mental illness. But until that can be established, the system needs to treat him as a competent person and he needs to obey applicable laws. Whether the law in question was sensible or just, he flouted it in a major way-- would not relocating the match have allowed him to comply ??
AS for violating laws generally . . . the fact that a law is repealed is irrelevant . .. it was the law at the time-- Consider its now illegal to transport Canadian cattle acrosss the US border. If someone was caught doing that today and the transport ban was lifted in 3 months, the offender should still face their charges
