I sat about 10 rows behind President Bush at tonight's mass at the cathedral. He came even though there wasn't any security and he's not catholic. I appreciate that.

Cardinal McCarrick reminded us that the pope stared down facism as well as communism. Since he was pope ever since I can remember, I guess I just viewed him as as only a pope from my time. But there's a lot that that he did in 84 years as a student, priest, bishop, cardinal and Pope.

I'm happy to see him finally rest in peace, after a full life lived.

He was a man who was exposed to great challenges throughout his life, responded superiorly to those challenges, and made the world a better place in the process. Rest in Peace Old Friend, and remember the world is forever in your debt for your accomplishments....

Put an end to popups!

People all over the world, despite their still maintaining differences with him and his Church on all sorts of political, medical, religious and ideological matters, lament the death of the Pope. I share their sentiment.

Rest in Peace, John Paul II.

Requiescat in pacem.

This person is truly a giant of our time, who had a profound impact on the Church he led and on the world around him. He was a great moral leader and will be missed.

While I am not a Catholic nor did I agree with some of what he did, he left this world a *better* place than when he came into it. In my eyes, that's all that counts in the end.

I am also one of nthese people who aren´t catholics and don´t agree with many of the things he said and did.
But there were enough things to earn him my respect. For example that his communication with "ordinary people" and the youth, or his strict anti war stance (although his condemning of wars didn´t stop any war from happening)

May he rest in peace

RIP JPII.

I only wish he had been able to make it back to Ireland before he passed away; I wasn't even born when he came to Ireland in 1979, where he did his best to deal with the Troubles in the North.

Even as a Catholic myself, I didn't always agree with his stance on several issues, but I wish I could have just 1/10th of that man's faith.

If he had done nothing else, his succesful efforts to stave off bloodshed during the solidarity movement (and a lot more serious **** was happening than was public knowledge at the time) would have marked him as the great leader that he was.

I paid my respects in the other thread before this was posted. But I'll to it in here.

It's inarguable that JP2 was a man of deep conviction and constant character. He followed what he really believed to be the truth, and he did it without wavering. That's a trait that's hard to not find impressive.

I disagree with much of his orthodox doctrines, and I do think some of his stances have inadvertantly harmed people. But he was without malice in all that he did, and was a credit to every person of religious faith. The good outweighed the bad, as demonstrated by the outpouring of genuine feeling for this man now around the world.

requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
