Appreciate it! Too bad this is basically a thread jack, it could otherwise become the first truely illustrated 'Poly debate.

Yes, that's very interesting the way some characters and personas in popular culture can have different 'layers' according to personal perception of the viewer.

I also like how works from the era we're talking about, whether film, photography or paintings/drawings can also be pleasing in their 'recording' of the particular period of time. Its culture and styles etc. (for want of better expression).

That's an added bonus when enjoying the works in retrospective, one that was mostly unintentional from the artist's hand.

I love the way Rita Hayworth looks in 'Lady From Shanghai'- and also the incredible depth that the camera and lighting give to the scenes in 'Citizen Kane'.

And going through old copies of National Geographic, there always seems to be some kind of naivete- whether it's in the advertisements, or the unintended double entendres in the text, or the descriptions of the various different societies.

And I love the vintage s.f. and horror films- how the Red Menace is transmuted into the fiends without a face, or Earth vs Flying Saucers, or giant ants or the fifty foot woman.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Exactly, the different way of looking at the world in the recent past has always fascinated me. In some respects it's like getting your hands on a mini time capsule when you read or view depictions of times past, that weren't intended as such. Old 'yearbooks' or year-in-review volumes and such are great for learning more about not so ancient times. And as time goes on, if they overlap with some of your own recollections it adds a strange and curious sense of nostalgia, often from events or other things where you'd least expect it. Sometimes it can be simply the typography of an old article that starts to evoke memories or associations.

BTW, I've also started a subscription to National Geographic (the US edition) 3-4 years ago, and I think it's very enjoyable and interesting. Maybe I should look into getting some old issues like you have, it sounds like just my thing too.

Full PM-box? Change here!

But what about MrFun. If he's lurking like I kind of suspect he is, he'll be most displeased with us threadjacking here, when it was all supposed to be about him transforming into MrGone.

I sometimes think I should disappear for a few months just to see if someone notices.

Then I think, and you shouldn't the Polytubbies get it easy even for a few months?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

interesting. A thread about MrFun becomes a thread about hot chicks from old ads. He wouldn't approve.
