Yep, don't cause waves while your stuff is still in their house. I've heard horror sotries about pissed off landlords/roommates. Next do what I did and only live with people the same general age as you because it saves a lot of hassles. Once I rented a room from this 40 year old black divorcee with a five year old wo loved to scream at 5am and was still poopng his pants. She'd go snooping in my room and complain if I drank beer in my own room ("because I have a small child") which is fair enough but she should have mentioned that in the lease. Finally she became a born again Christian and went totally psycho on me complaining about the "pagan" things I had in my room. I had a few D&D books and a Buddha statue I had bought in Thailand. :rolleys:

The final straw was she told me to get rid of my wine collection. My girlfriend at the time and I loved to spend vacations traveling the California coast and going wine tasting at the hundreds of small wineries whose products you couldn't find at the store. Thus I had a decent sized collection of wines I was aging and when she became born again she decided alcohol was the devil's juice and told me either the wine collection (stored neatly in a wine rack I had bought) was gone by the weekend (it was thursday) or I had to be out by Sunday. My lease said she had to give 30 days notice and I pointed that out but she started screaming and saying she'd throw all my things out and change the locks so I just packed my stuff and left.

I know I could have sued her and won but I just couldn't be bothered. I just filled a report with the campus housing authority and she was no longer allowed to advertise to students through the campus housing authority's web site. Take my advice and room with people your own age.

PC and Creative Webcam NX Pro. The Webcam came with all this software for free.

This is the software:
quote:
Creative WebCam Monitor

Using sophisticated motion detection algorithm, WebCam Monitor detects and captures a picture whenever anybody or anything gets near your PC.

Just point your camera, pick a capture mode (either regular intervals or motion detection) and WebCam Monitor does the rest.

The software is able to automatically sound an alarm, send you e-mail, or even upload a snapshot to your Web site. WebCam Monitor includes a collection of web templates and graphics so you can show your images to the world even without knowing HTML!

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Moving is a huge pain in the ass and I don't think I have it in me to move again, and I'm pretty sure they'd keep the deposit I'd given them as well as this month's rent, so I'd be out $1000 on top of having to pay another deposit and first-month's-rent on a new place. :|

It's more complex than that.

My "bedroom" has 2 doors -- one of which has a lock on it, and I do lock. The other door leads into the rest of the "apartment" (the first leads into the house), which I can't lock because Ben (the guy who lives in the other room in the apartment) uses a closet behind that door. I have a plastic curtain thing to close between that closet and my room, but it doesn't lock.

The entrance to the apartment needs to be open because another guy in the basement (named Toby) needs to use the bathroom in the apartment as well.

wow-- it sounds like the norm is for a heck of a lot of guys to be traipsing through your bedroom . . . . Something you might even have favored before you found your committed relationship .

On locks-- I think that a tenant can't put a lock on an apartment without giving the landlord a key. The idea is that the landlord as owner must always have the ability to have access but may only legally do so with notice or in an emergency etc.

Only the one guy comes in my bedroom (Ben), and it's more of coming in the hallway before my bedroom. There are two closets in the hallway, then my bedroom...but the door is before the closets. I have a plastic curtain slider thing to close between the closets and my room.

That said, Ben is really hot and walks around in his CK boxerbriefs after 9pm-ish He lived in the room next to me at the old place. Mechanical Engineering student from Waterloo.

He has a girlfriend, though.

Your right to privacy is usually dictated by the laws of the state or province you're in. You need to check the local laws.

In Calif., your landlord would be in big trouble.

Basement apartments are legal in Toronto? Here in NYC they are illegal (yet extremely common, which leads to heaps of tenant abuse)

Slightly off topic, but are you each paying $500, as in $1000 total rent for a two bedroom basement suite in (presumably) Markham? Isn't that a little steep?

After reading the preceding facts and fellow poster advice.....

Two assumptions:

1) You are in Toronto or elsewhere in the province of Ontario
2) You share a kitchen and/or bathroom with the owner.

In Ontario you are protected by the Tenant Protection Act IF you qualify as a tenant. If my 2nd assumption is correct (shared facilities) then you do not qualify for this act's protections.

By definition you are a "roomer" or boarder and have virtually no rights in this province. Sorry.

So have you confronted him already?

From the video and his behavior I think he wanted to check out to get more information about you behind your back to decide what kind of person you are. He didn't dare to touch anything though and it doesn't look like he'd be mean.

You could hide the video and meet with him for a little bit of talking to ease him and let the cam run for another week afterwards. If he still intrudes there is something fishy. I think it's better not to play your trump card too early.

Sometimes people are just a bit too curious.

Yeah, each $500. And it's par for the course from what I've looked at and seen, it's a large room and such in a really nice house (4,500 sq feet) in a really nice neighborhood.

1 is correct, the house is technically in Richmond Hill, Ontario
2 is not correct, I share the kitchen and bathroom with Ben, the other basement tenant who is to move in tonight. The owners have their own kitchen and bathrooms upstairs.

This is the approach I'm planning on taking now after I've cooled off a bit. I'm leaving the camera running while I'm at work or otherwise out of the house.

It looks like he may have just been checking to see if I unplugged the mini-fridge...

If he keeps it up, I'll use the trump card on him.

I'm in Waterloo on the majority of weekends. Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.

If he enters again, I'm going to bring up the point of privacy.

If he enters after that, I'll show him the tapes and tell him he needs to give 24hrs notice.
