I guess i'm just more paranoid, and as a result more mercenary. If I ally, short term, I think about whether or not my ally is likely to betray me or not; and then I go ahead with it. I assume that others think in the same way ... though apparently not very many do.
I am not saying that I usually betray people - this is the first time i've actively betrayed anyone, and probably the last for a while yet. But, there are some situations where it's ... necessary, and I don't think very many of the rest of you will complain that the four of us took out Spaced's huge fleet of lasers, by far the biggest danger in this game (at the time).
I believe I earn "trust" by showing that the situation i'm suggesting (alliance, say) is in the best interest of both myself and my proposed ally. Skanky, if I suggested attacking someone with you, and you couldn't see any great benefit to it for me, would you ally with me? I doubt it. I hope not, anyway ... On the other hand, if you suggest an alliance to me, and you don't have any clear reason for doing so, I'm certainly not going to agree to it. But, if I suggest attacking someone that benefits you AND me, more than the betrayal of one or the other of us would benefit either of us, I would presume you'd accept.
There are many situations where this is the case, and that's where alliances come from in this game. I suggest to X, "Let's go attack Z, we'll each get 6 bases and we'll lose nothing." X has a large fleet, as do I, and Z has a similar sized fleet. X and I have 8 bases each, and Z has 12. That's a clear win-win, for 6 bases, and so X agrees.
OTOH, if I suggest the same thing, but Z has a fleet half the size of mine, and 12 bases, compared to X having a fleet twice the size of mine, and 16 bases. Would you ever accept that deal, as X? You'd be loony to - it's just asking for betrayal. And if I were X, i'd laugh at a suggestion like that, and then go attack on my own, or perhaps shield, *just in case*.
Do you see what I mean?

I know that there will only be one, but I will still honor my agreements. That is the delta. |
Eh, we'll see. I've kept the far majority of my agreements - ask Geomodder, for example; we agreed to a NAP, and we kept it, even though I wanted to attack him a few times. I don't think breaking some agreements makes me a dishonorable player, by this game's standards; I think it makes me a smart player, and more well respected by the smart players, who won't assume they can take me for a ride. I broke an agreement that was obviously made to be broken, but have held by more ... realistic agreements, ones with gains for everyone involved. I think that will earn me more, in the long run.

Chapter 13.2
Exit Strategy
quote:
Here is something to think about
Run.
-Strategy no. 36 of 36, Sun Tzu's Art of War
|

With war comes change, and now the winds of change were blowing against the old monarchial establishment.
While Siffan Industries' roller-coaster tech boom and busts had attracted headlines, Mr. Y's industrial empire had quietly amassed the largest fleet in the galaxy. Now, a small but still sizeable part of it was put to use.
But first, a spy operation. Under the cover of a space-typewriter-monkey dealer, an agent of Mr. Y infiltrated the headquarters of the Ventis Society.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"What? We've been spied?"
"I'm afraid so, Zol. Though it's not that bad, the only thing affected was our spy training program. It's not as if you ordered an attack anyway."
"That's what I'm concerned about- spies only play spy versus spy pranks with each other in old 20th century magazines- I sense an invasion coming."
"Well, looking at the fleet tactics manual, I don't think we should be worried too much about that. By the way, that was probably the shortest tactics manual since the days when people fought with rocks."
--------------------------------------------------
Zol's fleet was already at full power when Mr. Y's titans dropped in. Wasting no time, Zol ordered his crews to turn over the one-page tactics manual.
On the back was a single word: DISENGAGE.
---------------------------------------------------
Six bases, including the just completed new headquarters, were captured.

Chapter 13.3
JEBUS Saves Yet Again
quote:
Here is something to think about
Speak frequently and carry a big stick.
|

The legendary Shield of JEBUS defended the First Church of Our Lady of the Shield Generator for many years, until the bases were overrun the day Banobi decided to take the holy war on the offensive.
On that day, the infidels Colony I, Cosmos Stardust, and Ivan von Kristof had plundered the cathedral and carried off the Shield of JEBUS.
But the people of Kanobi had not been abandoned, they were merely put to trial. Over the next few years, Cosmos and Ivan had met eternal defeat, and Colony I was near its end.
And, among the chaos, a wandering monk had stumbled across an odd container in the ransacked warehouses of LaZorbattery2369, one which most would dismiss as ordinary, but his educated eye recognized immediately.
Inside was a small silver box with a single button on it, taped down with duct tape. In the back was an unusally thick power cord.
Excited, the monk rushed the box back to base, where it was quickly enshrined inside the Central Fusion Reactor Chapel.
Not long after, Min Grah's entire fleet appeared in orbit, and four torpedo titans were instantly vaporized, while a fifth severely damaged. JEBUS had saved again.

Chapter 13.4
Reposession
quote:
Here is something to think about
There are two kinds of people: those who believe in karma, and those who time has not yet come.
|

The capture of the Squid Temple came along with the Curse of the Squid Temple. Remarkably, the curse worked on machine as well as it did on humans.
Naturally, the system's logic circuits anticipated this, and had programmed an appropriate subroutine, known as FIFO, or Fleet In, Fleet Out.
So, when Agathari returned for his bases, Colony I's ships immediately disengaged.
--------------------------------------------
As for Agathari, well, karma was working- not only did he take back his own twelve bases, he also gained a thirteenth one that had just been constructed.
