You can, and you don't need special software or iTunes.

Hunting through the hard drive to find music files? - no thanks.

And I was forced to use XP the other day. What a piece of ****, it can't even display Unicode Greek with all the accents properly, and IE is just retarded (I love that stupid dog that wags its tail while you search for ****).

How anyone could get any work done with that crap is beyond me.

Here's something to consider:

" A new $29 Camera Connector lets the iPod Photo double as an enormous backup for your digital camera. Using this tiny adapter, you can download your latest shots off your camera to free up space in its own memory for new pictures.

"It's the definition of simplicity in operation. Plug a camera's USB cable into the Connector's jack, turn the camera on and the iPod will prompt you to import your pictures. As they transfer, it will flash a thumbnail preview of each on the iPod's screen; when you're done, you can delete those shots off the camera or leave them intact. "

And...
"Now Apple is taking another crack at adding color to an iPod. The price of entry is now $349, and Apple sells only one non-color-screen iPod outside of the iPod mini line. In other words, color now amounts to a feature you get for free if you want more than 20 gigabytes of storage in an iPod."

As far as I understand, Windows doesn't work like the above unless the "player" is simply a USB Mass Storage system (USB-key) like the Nomad MuVo. The Zens require a music app like MediaSource, WMP, Winamp (w/ plugins), etc to transfer music.

So you download all of your music in iTunes? That must be expensive.

Because I don't need both. Why am I going to go hunting around my system for "05 - Sweet Caroline".m4a" to drag it on to my mp3 player, and then do the same with the 239 other songs I want to put on my ipod?

Granted, the Finder has type and find, but it is still a pain in the arse to do.

It's simply easier to have a dedicated interface that searches all the metadata and allows me to drag and drop (if I want), but also allows me to use that data to make smart playlists for autofill, or just drag the album or artist name (e.g. "Neil Diamond") to the device in the source list.

quote:

No. My other sources automatically download the file, move it to a specified folder and add it to itunes. I never see it. My music files could be called things like "anal_fisting.mp3" and I'd never know or even care.

So don't use the method in this case. No one is forcing you. They aren't mutually exclusive.

If I download 2 new songs and want them on my player, it's far easiser for me to choose Send To -> Creative Zen or click-and-drag them to the Zen icon than opening up a music player and transferring them from there.

Or if I download a new album/set of music, I just click and drag the folder to the player...

FWIW, Windows Explorer reads metadata as well.

You're the one calling others "no-nothing idiots" while you're trying to restrict what is desirable behavior to other people. Think about it.

Inflate your Upload Space

I encoded my songs in AAC @ 224kbps. I have encoded 581 songs for now, some of these "songs" being hour long dj sets. It amounts to 5,79 GB. I'm wondering if I'm not going overboard here. Maybe I'm loosing diskspace for nothing. I'm not even sure I could hear the difference between a song encoded in AAC @ 224kbps or @ 192kbps, or even @ 128kbps. I'll wait till I get my good headphones.

I haven't ripped my classical nor my jazz yet. I briefly compared a techno song ripped @ lossless, @ 320Kbps and @192Kbps with my Sony headphones. And I admit couln't hear the difference. But my Sony's are not great cans. When I'll get my Sennheisers, I'll do some serious testing.

Some people might want to do something any number of stupid and inefficient ways. Luckily for them they can buy Windows XP Home ediition.

Lossless for an mp3 player is silly. None of the devices for sale are really hi-fi enough to warrant it.

On the other hand, if you are using Airport Express to play your stuff through your rack system, it would be worth it.

Or OS X, as it appears.

It is far more efficient to drag an single MP3 file to the device icon than to open iTunes and transfer it from there. So when downloading individual files, clearly that is preferrably.

You mean you handpick all your songs? I plan to rip all my music on my computer. Its about 400 albums and counting. Needless to say, all this won't fit on my Mini. And there's no way in hell I'm handpicking all this. So I'll set up a couple of smart playlists specifically for my Mini. With smart playlists, the possibilities are endless.
