quote: Vinegar is good, but not the Western white vinegar. It's okay if nothing else is available, but it doesn't have any flavours to it.
Try the Chinese "brown" or "red" varieties. They are great. Sometimes I drink that stuff straight. |
I dont mind the initial taste so much as I dont like the tart aftertaste it leaves on the back of my tongue.

"TR: These are the good years for Barb and me. We had a nice quiet Christmas and watched all of our favorite Christmas movies on DVD, sitting in our PJs and eating popcorn and got dressed and went out for dinner at a restaurant and dinner, which used to take four hours and included weeping and yelling and slamming doors, took twenty minutes including dessert, and we came home and got right to work on the 5000-piece jigsaw puzzle that Barb gave me for Christmas last year, a Jackson Pollock jigsaw puzzle, which is almost finished, and now she's given me an Ad Reinhardt one, which should be a big challenge ----- and then suddenly she burst into tears. (SS SNIFFLING) Barb. What's wrong?
SS: I always feel bad when Christmas is over, Jim. You know that.
TR: You miss the kids? You feel guilty about how we kicked them out of the house and told them not to come back until they'd straightened out and now it's been six years? Is that it?
SS: No, it's just that ----- I love listening to the radio at Christmastime. It's like suddenly we go back to the Fifties and we have pop music again.
TR: I don't understand.
SS: You remember pop music----- Perro Como, Patti Page, the Lennon Sisters-----
TR: Sure.
SS: Radio got so ugly in the 70s. And the 80s and the 90s. Heavy metal. Hip-hop. All that anger. And talk radio. Oh my gosh. But Christmas comes along and for two magical days we're back in the Eisenhower years when everybody sort of got along with everybody else. Because there are no heavy metal Christmas songs. So we get to hear Bing Crosby. Andy Williams. Burl Ives. It's the 50s 24/7 for two days.
TR: When did you start saying "24/7," Barb?
SS: I'm sorry. I meant, "Round the clock." Anyway, I wish it could last longer. Til Epiphany. January 6th. The twelve days of Christmas. ---- Remember the Roger Wagner Chorale recording of that? Remember when there were choirs on radio----- the Harry Simeone Chorale? The Norman Luboff Choir? Now you have groups called Chameleon Pustules and Naked Fusebox Mama. I miss the old days.
TR: Hey---- turn up the radio----- (GUITAR LOW, STARTS)
SS: What?
TR: Turn it up------ they're playing our song.
SS: Oh it's Bob----
RD (SINGING, DYLAN): Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.
Jack Frost nipping at your nose.
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up Eskimos……
Everybody knows-----
TR: All we need to ease our transition back to non-Christmas is ketchup, Barb. You know that. Ketchup contains natural mellowing agents that help you get over the post-holiday blues. And its festive red color really brightens up almost any dish.
SS: No doubt about that. (THEME)
RD: These are the good years, faces all a-glow,
Smoke from the chimney, the moon across the snow.
Ketchup is flowing on the escargot.
GK: Ketchup. For the good times.
RD: Ketchup...ketchup... "

" ...after a word from the Catchup Advisory Board.
Sue Scott: These are the good years for Jim and me. Jim went out and bought matching his and hers iPods in pink and gold, which put us way over our weekly budget, so I expressed my anger in a constructive, relationship-affirming manner like my life coach taught me-I made a meatloaf . And afterwards I felt wonderful. It turns out that Jim found a new tax accountant who could get us a refund that is actually quite a bit more than we earned last year. It didn't sound right to me, but Jim said that the guy is really really smart.
Tim Russell: He showed me how we can deduct the cost of fruit as a health expense.
SS: Fruit?
TR: Antioxidants, Barb. And I'm buying a flat-screen TV tomorrow, so I can deduct that, too. And also that Harley Davidson I've always wanted. .
SS: I don't know. Those don't sound like business expenses to me.
TR: A 42-inch widescreen plasma EDTV with HDMI input and a six-piece surround-sound system with a long-throw subwoofer, plus the bone-rattling rev of a Harley engine— it's about image, Barb. You put out a certain image, and people want to do business with you.
SS: I notice here on his business card — his slogan is "Not Paying Taxes Is How We Starve The Beast of Big Government". It doesn't sound right, Jim. Why don't we just do TurboTax again?
TR: Listen, Barb — this our chance to keep more of our money and live life the way we always meant to. This guy is a professional. He knows what he's doing.
SS: Jim, we worked hard to get where we are. I don't want to spend my golden years in prison. Even if it was good for Martha Stewart and she learned a lot about herself. Besides, ponchos make me look fat.
TR: You're right, Barb. We should just do our taxes ourselves and lose money like we always do It's the right thing to do.. I don't know what I was thinking.
SS: Maybe you're not getting enough Catchup. Catchup has natural mellowing agents that help you avoid morally dubious situations. So you don't wind up making your own license plate in the big house.
Rich Dworsky: (SING) These are the good years so try to keep it lawful
Prison's overrated and the food is something awful
Life is flowing
Like catchup on falafel
GK: Catchup—for the good times.
RD: Catchup, catchup "

It's a Thai chile sauce, sold commercially in a mild or hot form, which is similar to an orangish-red ketchup and used in cooking or as a condiment. Google also reveals that there's a Vietnamese-American version. Here's a recipe (should you find yourself with a pound of hot red chiles in your fridge that you want to use up):
quote:
Sriracha Sauce
A table condiment similar to ketchup--but much more
pungent--sriracha sauce is named after a seaside town in
Thailand. Increasingly popular, this sauce is found on the
tables of Thai and Vietnamese restaurants all over North
America. Fresh red chiles are the key to the flavor of this
recipe.
1 pound fresh red serrano, cayenne, Thai, or chile de arbol
chiles, stems removed
2 1/2 cups rice vinegar (or substitute white distilled
vinegar)
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon salt
Remove the stems from the chiles. Place the chiles and vinegar
in a saucepan and heat to boiling. Turn off the heat and add
the sugar and salt and stir until dissolved. Place the
saucepan contents in a food processor or blender and puree
until a smooth thin-paste consistency. Add additional rice
vinegar if the mixture is too thick. Allow the mixture to
steep for several hours, place in glass containers, and
refrigerate. The consistency should be slightly thinner than
ketchup.
Optional: Strain the sauce through a sieve and discard the
solids for a smooth, seedless consistency.
Yield: 3 to 4 cups
Heat Scale: Hot

From pg 1 of this thread...D)
In the Philippines we sometimes use bananna ketchup. No, really. Tomato ketchup costs more and tastes about the same. I like the consistancy of tomato ketcup better and bananna ketchup tends to chunk and then you can't pour it. They color it red for whatever reason.

Same as the dinner table, next to the salt.

Are you sure ? I would have thought it would have been closer to spagetti and canned tomatoes.
