While Mr. Y had survived both a shield impact and a rogue attack, it was not a clean war. Indeed, the quagmire had weakened his forces by 25%, erasing most of his edge against the Socialist bloc. Furthermore, Vetko was baseless, armed, and dangerous. Things looked bleak.

Still, the capitalists were living large compared to most of the galaxy. Three powers had been reduced to refugees, while a fourth hung onto a single captured base. Whereas previously the two superpowers controlled 2/3rds of the galaxy's firepower, that number had since climbed to almost 75%.
