Get a dog if you have space for it to exercise and time to give it the attention it needs. Cats are definitely more self-sufficient, and some are exceptionally sweet-natured and affectionate. I have a personal preference for dogs, but I've known many cool cats.

A fellow I knew in high school used to take his dog surfing when we'd go. He'd also take his dog hiking with us, jogging when we went, and the labrador retrevier would jumpr in ponds or streams when we'd go swimming or fishing. The dog just loved people and couldn't bare to be left alone. He was a great dog who'd actually stand on the surf board and actually climb back up on it when they wiped out.

Try doing that with your cat.

Why would you not want to take your dog with you? He just wants to be your friend and go where you go? Dog's aren't natural swimmers but they'll do anything you do just because they love you and they want to be your friend. There is a reason a dog, not a cat, is man's best friend.

My cats act like dogs. Grendel follows me from room to room. Both of them are generally wiating at the door when I come home. They both want attention.

Dogs actually need a lot more attention that cats, if you want to keep them happy. Cats are social critters, but dogs are pack animals, and so if you can't devote the time your dog needs, you shouldn't have one.

I say, teach your woman a lesson. Getta snake. Make sure she's around when you have to feed it.

Seriously, your primary factor in determining your pet should be the amount of attention and care you can give it. Dogs need the most, so if you aren't home a lot or don't want to pay lots of attention to it, don't get one. Cats need less attention, and can be left alone for longer periods of time, days even, as long as there's food or water avaialbe (though they will give you the cold shoulder when you return).

I would be home every day but there would be periods to when I would be gone for up to two weeks at a time. My girfriend goes to school near me though and would most likely be here everyday for a few hours even when I'm gone. The thing is I don't have a lot of yard room and I grew up as a kid and teen with my dogs outside in the country doing what they wanted pretty much with no leash to worry about. I don't have that here and I am not fond of inside dogs. Dogs should be medium to big sized and be outside where they can run and get excercise when I'm not around to run them down the street. My ideal pet would be to have a Lab or another German Shepard but where I'm at now that won't happen.

alva you mentioned two cats. To keep them company when I'm not around?

The dogs I know (or knew... some have passed away) can all be divided into two groups: One group bites everything that moves, no questions asked, while the other groups dogs are afraid of everything including cats

My grandpa had a hound dog that was afraid of the cat. There would be a lot of times we would be on the front porch and see the dog round the corner of the house followed close behind by the momma cat .

Partly, yes but they do have a different relationship with each other than they do with mankind.
They learn stuff from one another they will never do from us, etc..

Think of it this way;
You have a parental relationship with them, while among each other they have a sibling one.
(we are talking castrated ones here, otherwise it's a different ball (no pun...) game.

Note that it can take up to a week before they can stand each other and this has to be monitored (especially if one of them is older and the other a kitten), in rare cases they never will btw.

small dogs suck

cats are good in general

big dogs are good in general

but they need to be outdoors, and you need to be the sort that is interested in doing outdoor things with them

Cats

I don't like dogs too much... I don't hate them, but I'd prefer not to have one.
Additionally cats catch mice and in the countryside where I live we have quite a bit of them. 2-3 years without cats and they'd surely build a nest somewhere in the house.

Ofc the downside is that they are chewing computer network and power cables. At least ours do.

I do hate some dogs though. I hate attack dogs with a passion. Yes I admit I'm scared of them . I shouldn't have to fear a "pet". I don't like going into people's yards when they have dogs.

In fact I probably wouldn't even have a dog, but mine has such a great personality. She stole my heart. I could never give her up.

Smear them in with something spicey or alternatively some leon juice, that usually helps.
If all else fails get some cables covers designed for pet rodents/rabbits.

DIss, that's what your own dogs do.. steal your heart. That's why it's so difficult to put them to sleep, because they are so loyal. If you would die, they'd be by your side for days and worried. So.. how can you put them out? Of course you can, when they are suffering very much with no hope though.

Some cats are great like that. My grandmother's cat was like that, she tells me ( until it was shot by poachers ). Most cats are sh!t, though.

Anyhow, I have a small, redhaired pinscher mutt, and he's the best dog EVAR. He runs, is inquisitive, smart, and isn't terribly nervous like most smaller dogs are. He's like a medium dog in a small dog's body.

me and the mr have two cats, we dont have room for a dog i am technically a dog person but in our apt the cats are suitable. One cat claimed tubes and the other cat claimed me my cat is more out going and pretty much kicks it with anyone. The other one is less social and under the bed if new folks come into the house. The fat one, mine loves attention and will get in ur face when he wants to play. Oh just for the record to get a cat to mind all you need is a squirt water bottle and when they start to claw hit them with a spray. they quickly learn they cant do that anymore. All tubes has to do now is show the cats the bottle and they run.

Hearing about the size you got, definetly get a cat. There are plenty of sweet, personable cats out there. Get a really young one, so they can bond with you as they grow. If you are concerned about the scratching, get them declawed. Nowadays they use laser them out and the cats have no clue that they don't have claws. My best friend's cat will "scratch" all sorts of things... but he lost his claws a year ago .

Sprayber, I have no problem with cats.. I don't even hate cats.. I think they're OK. Cat owners on the other hand... I mean.. it's like playing hockey with no contact and hockey with full normal rules. Can't handle the tough game? YOu have to cry and whine about everything? Listen buddy, you're not superior on the ice claiming that you can dodge the hits and score more, step to the rink and let's see who hits who and what happens... why are you dodging man? What's up?

YOu know... cat owners are the girlie men, starting to take their skates off and saying 'it's not that I can't or don't want to, it's just that I really have to go now'. Girlie men. And then they say to their buddies 'yeah I kicked their asses', which didn't really happen, now did it.

Actually as a kid, I was attacked by german sheppard. Vicious it was. But I like them german sheppards too.
