Right. Ask the average American to pick from a list that says "Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Ursula K. Le Guin" and they will probably give you a befuddled look -- or they would know just Clarke from his TV show, not his literature.

My point stands. If you know science fiction literature, you know Ursula le Guin.

You can ask the average American a lot of things and recieve a befuddled look in return, I don't really see the point there.

If you ask most literate people (Sci Fi fan or not) to name a science fiction writer you would get a damn sight more 'Clarks' and 'Asimovs' than 'Le Guins'. Surely that makes her 'more obscure', can't you just pick one out of the two writers like you were asked to?

a lot of people seem to think that Clark and Asimov (and Niven) are SF gods for some obscure reason..

I voted for asimov. I've read maybe 3 books by clark.
2001 bore me. the other 2 I can't even remember the names.
Asimov robot, foundation and empire series is superior to most sci-fi. Still, there are books that top his for me.
I have enjoyed numerically more books Heinlein than either of them put together.
On average I enjoy john barnes, l.e. modesitt and orson scott card more.
There are many more.
I've never got around to Ursula.

I like Clarke more. Nightfall was a classic story, but Clarcke had many of those as well, such as Childhood's End.

I actually think the 2001 series is one of Clarke's weakests. He had many other great stories. I really liked Imperial Earth, for example.

I don;t think either is the best Sci Fi writer out there, though.
