I understand the environmental impact of meat, but there's no reason to completely do away with it. You can cut the environmental impact by 90% by eating small amounts of meat every couple of days instead of a big piece at every meal.

As for the other 10%, there are more easier ways to save the world.

Vegetarians are vegetarians because they're meat heads.

That said, how about taters?

Sorry, thats not what I meant

By educated I mean knowing you need protein and where to get it from veggie sources,

and not being in poverty so you are free to make the choice to be veggie without it reducing your quality of life and life expectancy

I am sure for lots of people in the world meat is a necessary part of their diet, but for the rest of us in the first world it is a choice we have the freedom to make

Yes. It's pretty common for meat to cause sickness whens omeone has been vegetarian for a long period of time. It has happened to me, once, when I unknowingly ate somethign with meat in it. And when my sister stoped beign vegetarian (she found out that she couldn't eat glouten, which makes a vegetarian diet just too complex) she had to very slowly progress to eating meat again, because it would often make her sick.

Yes, but this is to make a statement...which is:
I disagree with the exploitation of animals nowadays. I don't have nothing against eating meat per se, if it's done properly and if the animals have not needlessly suffered when being killed, if they have lived in okay conditions etc. The thing is that this is not possible if everybody wants to eat large quantities of meat. It seems to me that meat is just like other garbage you buy in a supermarket... you throw it into a pan and there it is. There is no respect for animals, and certainly no respect for a balanced environment. That's also due to the fact that there are way too many humans on this planet... Like many other things we take for granted, few people actually think about this

Anyway I would be a hypocrit if I ate small amounts of meat and protested against the way meat is being processed these days.

He meant ( at least I would have ) uneducated in the finer vegetarian culinary arts . Poor , I don't know . Meat is much more expensive than vegetables are in India .

As for myself , I am vegetarian , not for moral reasons ( there really aren't any , when it comes to this issue ) , but because I'm fond of my health .

Of course , the fact the India has a vegetarian tradition which has evolved over thousands of years helps in no small measure .

while i agree most folks do not research the nutritional value of a veg lifestyle unless you plan on follwing that regime. As for poor i dont get either however i wasnt try to be offensive but merely asking what the two have to do with being a meat eater. I for one did grow up in a poor mexican family, when we didnt have any meat we usually ate beans and rice with some brand of a tortilla wheter it be corn or flour. Chicken was always cheaper to buy so we also ate our fair share of chicken. I think in most poor families food supplies are limited so u must eat what is availabe and probably not adhere to just veggies or meats.

In which case i got after rereading his post and looking back on my childhood. I got the poor idea and can even give validation to his uneducated argument. Since in some famlies just as being poor some are uneducated and have no idea of nutritional value of food the eat since they the eat what was available. I was focused on the fat that i am neither poor nor uneucated and chose to eat meat since im not in postion that i have to eat whats available

Several points:

1. Many animals are raised inhumanely (e.g. chicken farms) in many countries (probably different in Mexico).

2. Some animals are fed with grain (e.g. cattle in the States) that can be otherwise used to sustain humans.

I had a very low meat diet for well over a decade. I basically used it to compliment vegitable and grain meals.

Then I went on Atkins. I'm never going back to not eating meat. Oh, what I missed. I don't even have the excuse that it's too expensive. I buy in bulk during insame sales. I just bought two pork roasts (12.3lbs), some hamburger (5.2 lbs), and chicken drumsticks (4.2lbs), and they were all ¢99/lb. Almost 22 lbs of meat (and fat and bone)! I wish I had one of those big freezers. Meat is cheaper than veggies. That's just wrong.

I'm definetly a meat eater. Like JohnT, I find fried chicken heavenly, but also a good burger, buffalo wings, a juicy steak, and good salmon or tuna (as well as other fish) always sounds good to me. That's just a small sample, really . I love lamb, but hardly get to eat it .

I only eat kosher animals, so that means no pig (also no horse, rabbit, etc but thats hardly a restricition). In the interests of moving another step toward vegetarianism I decided to avoid certain animals that are kosher, but that i wouldnt usually eat (like goat). So the only red meat I eat is beef, and occasionally lamb. I dont eat veal, out of concern for techniques used in raising it. I do eat poultry.

I try to keep the amount of red meat I eat down, both for health and for enviro reasons.

Thatīs what I always say And itīs true. Thereīs a tremendous waste of food in the rich countries. Even if we changed the whole world to vegetarianism the equalities would still be there. For that to change thereīs got to be a serious change in lifestyle and economics.

That's the whole point. We overproduce. There's no need for this huge meat production. Most agricultural production is meant to feed these animals. This year the equivalent of an area as large as Belgium was cut down in in the rain forest region to cultivate more soy and probably other products to sustain animals. Okay cutting down the trees is not solely for that, but it does play a large part in it.

We should produce meat in the old fashioned way. It'll be much more expensive, but at least we'll eat less meat that way. That's good for everyone's health anyway. Raising livestock the old fashioned way works too you know...

And Btw: If we didn't export our overproduction to countries like Ghana, etc... the poor countries in short, they would be better off too. In fact, in most 3rd world countries it would be possible to produce enough for them to live off. It's our ubercheap crap that crushes the local markets so they can't sell anything.

We subsidize our products so we can produce our **** at a lower cost than that it would actually cost to produce without the money donated by the EU etc...!!

This world is simply evil..
