Really? Fill me in, because in the near future I plan to buy a laptop, and because I previously had a Dell desktop without any serious problems I was thinking of buying a Dell laptop.

If there are inherent flaws/problems with Dell laptops, I will look elsewhere.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Nothing specific so far, just generic comments on the mediocre quality.

The last Dell desktop I opened didn't have an AGP slot, and it's supposedly less than a year old. Odd.

I've had to replace the hard drives in the last two Dell laptops. But they were under warrantee. The DVDROM is looking to be the next to replace, though.

Wow, you make a statement that Dell laptops are of poor quality, and you can't specify exactly what is wrong with them.

Thanks for helping me with my future purchasing plan.

My five-year old Dell notebook functions fine, but I've noticed a rise in complaints about Dell. I don't know if those are all legitimate.

Trifna,

Your wants may be higher than your budget. I don't think there are (reliable) brands that offer the quality you seek for the money you're willing to dish out.

I generally don't recommend Acer or Asus, I've seen poor architecture on some of their models causing malfunctions and/or heat problems.
IBM, Toshiba, Dell, and Packard Bell are decent machines. Look for the best value proposition

@ Q3 – I was referring to those horrible cases on the page you linked to. They looked like Julian Clary designed them.

1. they're decent and cheap, which is why i linked to them.
2. the fact that you know who the feck julian clary is suggests to me you're more interested in style than performance... and therefore must be t3h gh3y.

IBM laptops are pretty much best-of-breed, if you can afford them.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

1. Driver support sucks. Point in case: the video card. nVidia comes out with new drivers every couple of months and I want to be uptodate. However, their drivers don't support the laptop video cards - they expect laptop manufacturers to adapt their drivers to whatever video cards their laptops use. Toshiba hasn't updated its drivers since 2001, whereas Dell, which uses the same nVidia video card in some laptops, follows the updates far more closely.

omegadrivers.net

Helps. Not a true nvidia solution, since they're tweaked, but they sure do help...

Put an end to popups!

I don't think that my budget will spring upwards, but I think that I might sacrifice some power over quality. Perhaps that a ThinkPad does pay back in the end (I'd buy it second handed I guess).

MrFun:

Dell laptops pre-2002 were built like tanks, and are good. The most recent ones, however, have heating issues: particularly the m500/600 series. Do any sort of graphically-intensive application on it: games, photoshop... and it starts frying your eggs.

Unless you're at a desk.
