Winston, Northwest is the only safe quarter of DC. The other three are generally poor and high in crime, although there are a few exceptions.

I'd recommend Colonial Williamsburg if you want to see what an early American colonial town looked like and see how people lived.

If your planing to go farther inland, try Mineapolis/St. Paul. It has our country's largest shopping mall, many well know art places, one of the world's greatest orchestras, a nice downtown, and It has nice parks (it is not called the City of Lakes for nothing). Also, it doesn't get too hot and muggy in the summer. In the winter they make a massive "ice palace".

as far as climate goes, the west coast wins hands down

but I live sort of north, north-east and it is fine....

northwest is where all the filthy rich live.. (both Virginia and Maryland)

Ok, the President Inn on New York Ave, which is the one I had in mind is definitely out. Their quoted prices were roughly half of those of most other hotels I skimmed, and it seems there's an obvious reason for that.

St. Paul and surrounding area will have to wait for another time because of the distance, but I agree that the region is worth seeing, definitely. My initial plan 5 years ago was to take a Northern route to the West coast, which would have brought me to Minnesota. But I decided on going for the Southwest.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no shame in mistaking hotels in faraway countries for actually being honest in their advertising.

If I went to NY I would try and take an airing of Emeril live or whatever show he is doing now

Also, go to Trump Towers, see Strawberry Fields, grab lunch at Zabars, picnic at Columbia University, play at FAO Schwarts, ride nekkid on the subway out to Coney Island, try and issue your own stock on Wall Street, visit the Twin Towers Memorial, linger in Tribeca, go up the statue of liberty, smoke dope in and listen to jazz in Grenwhich, and take in the views on the Empire State Building.

For a good time at night, skip Georgetown and head to Adams Morgan/Dupont or some parts of Capital Hill if you want to see government types.

Thanks all for being so helpful and showing such interest in helping me along to have a good time once I get there. I've printed out this thread, as it really is invaluable to me already after such a short time. Wouldn't want anything to happen to it.

It's getting late here, I'll check back tomorrow, where the hunt will be on for finding a good hotel. Lots of good leads are on hand.

Ok, now I have a couple of choices that I've found prices for on a hotel booking site called hotels.com.

The first one is Best Western Capitol Skyline, on 10 I Street SW, it's 2 stars but looks very nice and the price I got was 127 USD. It is only 5 blocks from Capitol, and very close to the Navy Yard Metro Station.

The second one is called Quality Courthouse Plaza, on 1200 N. Courthouse Road just across the Potomac, next to Arlington National Cemetary. This hotel is 3 stars and I can get a price of 142 USD. It's less than a quarter of a mile from Court House Metro Station.

pchang's suggestion earlier of Jurys Washington Hotel is not as attractive to me, it's 3 stars, but the price I can get at hotels.com is 224 USD. Much too steep, considering also that it's not nearly as centrally located as e.g. the BW Capitol Skyline.

Right now I lke to go for the BW Capitol Skyline, not because the price is a little lower than that of Quality Courthouse, but because of the location so close to Downtown, I think there will more to do in the evening close to the hotel. And also Best Western is a well known chain to me, and I was very satisfied the times I used them on my last stay in the U.S.

If you are not dead set on BW Capitol Skyline then I would recommend against it. The location is a lot worse than Jurys Washington Hotel from all the perspectives that I can think of, despite appearances on a map. In actual fact, Jurys is in a perfect location -- action if it you want it, none if you don't, overall low crime, and if you wanted to, you could walk to and from downtown, only a couple of blocks away. I haven't stayed in the hotel, but I note that you may be able to reserve online for a good price on their web site.

If you can't find anything good in NW DC, then go to the Virginia suburbs on a subway line. The courthouse hotel seems really good.

I booked at the Capitol Skyline half an hour ago.

I don't want to give the impression I'm not listening to your advice at all, but the total price difference between Jury and Capitol Skyline of nearly 900 USD for 9 nights was not realistic for me. It's nearly double the price, and I got a favourable impression by checking Capitol Skyline on a number of booking sites, and also from calling the hotel and asking a few questions beforehand.

So it is completed.

Also, anything off the the northwest red line (i.e. friendship heights, bethesda, silver spring) are also very safe. Also, hostelworld.com's DC listings are almost all in NW DC and in decent neighborhoods.
