I think counterspy is a useful tool that speeds up the game a bit (by allowing attacks that are otherwise prevented)

That would probably make them more powerful actually, as they could be used liberally.

An element of my defeat against Jag in GO 2.0 was my lack of remaining counterspies when Jonny hindered my allied attack on Spaced, thus giving the immense Spacedian empire to him alone.

A good point, but I think if you have to choose between building a spy, counterspy or shield, you are not going to build too many counterspies.

Spies are supposed to be powerful. Having two automatic counters to them weakens them far too much.

If you and the other perpetrators of the abomination in GO5 promise you won't do anything similar again then we have no need of counter-spy. Otherwise we do have need of it to prevent an unscrupulous clique from destroying this game.

Not betraying one's allies is unscrupulous? You are so full of yourself, Ljube.

Your fixations aside, the reason we needed counter-espionage was Smiley's perpetual spy sleaze. Not being able to train a spy and use one on the same turn fixes that problem.

Having run the last two games I'd say counterspy is good as it is. There were only a handful of instances in over forty rounds where its use mattered.
