Yeah, the victory of Otto I. and the following consolidation of the empire lead to an upswing in several fields (said renaissance) that was in place even during the reign of the second and the third Otto. OTOH even the second Heinrich's rule saw something of it when he followed the third Otto, so it is not exclusively an Otto-specific phenomenon.

Of course, they all had no idea of codpieces back then. That's what you get when barbarians without pantaloons try to make a renaissance

Indeed. Dominated the architectural landscape up here for about a decade from 1890 onwards. Together with Neo-Gothic, Neo-Baroque and a few others it's one of the architectural "styles" of the late 19th century (old architectural languages squeezed onto contemporary frames) that modernism and the arts and crafts movement reacted against.

I often wonder what might have happened had Venice not had to face the Ottoman Empire- what it might have achieved, with a trading and banking system and insurance that predated the V.O.C. and the East India Company, and efficient shipyards, the Arsenal, the glassware, printing presses and mining and market gardening enterprises, the salt pans- it's a mini industrial revolution just waiting to happen.

true that they had a banking system and a efficienter than normal shipyard...but both were way way smaller in idea and start up than the V.O.C and the East india company...banking exploded because of the companies such as the V.O.C and shipyard didnt get really effective until they started using winddriven sawmills...


for the rest i agree you can give a lot of to italy (although they took a lot of the arabic world)

I almost forgot- two more I can recommend to you if you are going back to study.

One is a corrective to the 'How awful the Middle Ages were' view of history (in comparison with the Renaissance, that is).

It's called 'Those Terrible Middle Ages- Debunking the Myths' and is by French historian Regine Pernoud.

The original's title is 'Pour en finir avec le Moyen Age' . The English translation is a little idiosyncratic in places.

A big deal for rennesaince was done by byzantines escaping to venice at that time. there was a nice ehxibition some time back in venice from the municipality of the city about this
btw saint marco looks so orthodox i think we should confiscate it. not to mention the twin byzantine lions at the front.

What about all those big azz towers that were built by those Italian merchant families? Those were pretty cool. Or was that during earlier times? You know, the same group that sold out the Byzantine Empire.
