Che - concealed carry, which I am going to get soon.
First, find a friend, preferably in law enforcement. Handle the various guns, preferably at a shooting range with someone who can give you tips. Find one which is comfortable, and with sufficiently low recoil that you can handle it after firing 50 rouds at the range - you will need to practive. Balancing all factors, I tend to favor a 9mm semi-auto - cheap ammo, often fairly inexpensive, adequate (again - hair-splitters please note not good) stopping power, ready availability, low recoil.
Secondly, if you are carrying, you often have fewer options during the assault phase of a confrontation. In many juristictions you MUST attempt to withdraw from the situation first. If you don't, you can get charged with assault (for fellow posters note I did not say convicted) if the District Attorney who gets you case decides he has a hard-on for you. Or woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Or had a fight with the significant other, etc.
Note - you should have shown them a photo of Mrs. Che first, and stated I don't call anybody that, this is a photo of my wife. I did call the lying little bastard a punk, and now he's too chicken so he's trying to get you to do his "dirty work" - I don't know the street vernacular way to rephrase this, but you get the ponit.

There is also the possibility that the fat guy was making up that I said "nigger" in order to neutralize any opposition to his starting a fight. After all, if I had said something like that, then I would have "deserved" a beat down or at least not be worth the effort of assisting.
Pekka, one thing you need to remember about "punks" in the U.S. They often carry guns. Getting a beatdown was the least of my worries. It was getting shot or stabbed that had me worried.
shawnmmcc, Florida has both a concealed carry law and also removed the requirement that you must seek to escape before escalating to deadly force. Here it is simply enough to believe your life is being threatened or that you are being threatened with serious bodily injury. If I had a gun, I could have legally killed him. Even if we didn't have such a law (it was just passed a month or so ago, and there were threads on it), I had my back to the wall and was between two tables. I had no escape.

You didn't have to insult him you know. You could have politely reminded him that its good manners to apologize when he mistakenly blows cigarette smoke in someone's face. That would have shocked the heck out of him.

Actually it might encourage the bad behaviour even further since Che would have come off as a whiney cracker. We all know homeboys dont like the gentry.

) and he was gone...2 days later he came with 14 of his friends to my school to beat me up...he himself didnt do a thing but let his friends beat me up because he told them i said something racist about him (he was i think from marocco) only 4 of his friends hit me but it still hurt...gave one a bloody nose but that was all...thank the heavens i bump into him 3 weeks later when we were both alone...never heard from him after that...morale of this story is...sometimes **** just happens
