Where on Gods green earth can I buy and download this expansion off the internet? I am guessing a legitimate copy would solve my problems . Can anyone help me on this? I've just re-formatted my HD & have Norton Anti-Virus installed with auto-updates so I don't suspect any more virus threats. What I do suspect is JAVA runtime, Macromedia flash, " " Shockwave, DX8.0, and Yahoo IM. Possibly Norton AV itself. I am going to next uninstall much of this software.
Sincerely,
jwpeek

Its not possible, its completely out of print. SMAX is now distributed by EA, except they're not selling it anymore. Now legit downloads either.

6 days is not a cause for replacement.
Suggestion: run the installer in compatibility modes.

$139!!!!! I hope you live in Canada. I picked up alien crossfire for £20 off ebay and a re-release of smac for £5.99.
Compatibility modes are a feature of windows XP.

Maia, one possibility that has arisen from similar issues occuring when installing on a friends comp is that your unzipping utility is out of date or maybe just crap. Try using winrar or ultimate zip (google for them) to unzip the aliencrossfire.

compatbibility modes:
in your explorer (when opening the game file) right click (instead of double left clicking) on the file, select properties, select compatibility, select "run in compatibility mode". try all possible settings, though i dont think any of these will work.
google for "winzip" download version 6.0 shareware (or higher?). google for "winrar", download newest version. try to unzip SMAC/X with these two newer version programs. might help.
Xdfe53.dll sounds like a windows problem.
that file is not part of SMAC/X, so i suppose its part of windows or one of your windows programs.
i know you already tried, but: close every single running program, above all: anti virus and firewall.
do you know how to deactivate the built-in windows firewall?
eventually, you should only see the system clock in the lower right corner of the windows start screen.
you dont necessarily have to delete these programs. just try to close them. if you dont know how, hit ctrl alt del select the tab processes then find names that could correspond to the program(s) youre looking to close. right click and end process.
worst thing that can happen is that you lock-up your windows and have to reset.
P.S. whom should i crush with you leaving?
did i say "crush"? well "befriend" of course :ahem

There's going to be a slight delay in my turn. I've moved to another city to start my Masters. I wanted to assemble my desk before I installed my computer, but since I have a neck injury right now, what I think I'll do is take my computer to my office, hook it up and then play the turn using my office's ethernet connection. I should have the turn ready by Friday.

Another problem that I encountered with my home computer. One of the clips that holds the CPU heatsink snapped off and the heatsink fell off. It's possibly been tumbling around hitting other components such as the video card and ram. I'm getting some guy in my physics department to test each component to see what's salvageable but I'm going to definately need to buy (or replace) parts for my computer. And I don't really have access to a WinXP machine so that I can install a copy and play from there.

detrius, do you have any estimate about how long it will take you to get your computer back in shape ?

Yes I do. Probably on Tuesday. I'm still here. Anyways, networking my computer shouldn't be a problem as I can use my university's network connection. I have ordered a new motherboard and a new CPU but I don't know how long that's going to take.
I'll ask a grad student of mine to see if I can install SMAX on his computer temporarily so I can play my turn. I apologize for the delay.

My parts are on backorder. I've asked for an ETA but I don't know it yet. If you want you can find a replacement for me. I'll still be here if you don't find a replacement by the time my parts come in.

Turn 2109 to Bearhugger. My neck injury healed within a week.
Anyways, I received my parts on Saturday and ended up installing a new motherboard and cpu by myself for the first time. I wanted to save on the labour costs. Took me the entire day, but everything is working now.

Maia, you could send an email to bearhugger to ask if he received the turn from Detrius...
(today it's exactly 1 month ago I've last seen a turn from this game...)
