AFAIK, if you play on high level you are counteract to AI game (well, Soren programming skill, to be fair) *cheating*.
So, we are not really learn to play a better game, but how to avoid the disadvantage;
i.e. if the AI manage to build quickly (shield/hammer bonus) than me, I can:
- learn to fine tune my production, to max squeeze my city production (good);
- learn to produce on more optimized sequence/tech path combo (good);
- discover that I can throw away the dirty water AND the child, let alone the building and learn to rush and kill other nation very early in the game (easy win, boring repeating game in the long run).
If we are forced to learn and adopt the only safe path to victory we lose. If Soren cut any game alternate route like in Civ 3 (as raising cost of Palace building so much to prevent the strategic use of it, or support ICS by easy access back to randomly disappeared resources, etc) we are not learning how to improve our skill, IMHO.
I'll play at more balanced level (regent), more to learn rules and game news by practice on the field (DoItYourself tutorial) than to win. Then I'll play some games at that level. Sometime I'll lose, mostly I'll win, then I'll move on higher level and quickly give up for excessive lenght of turns, too few spare time and (to be fair with the civ master) a real lack of proper deep strategical skill

I'm definitely among those who starts off on Chieftain just to get the lay of the land -- and to try reckless ideas. For example, winning the "Age of Discovery" scenario as the Aztecs. I have already chosen my project for Civ4: Operation Rabbi. In other words, see if this new religion thing will allow you to conquer the world more through faith than through warfare.

First game will be Monarch and I give it a 50/50 chance to win. Will be testing some around, not playing to much aimed at a win. Probably will abort the game and start new (bzw. I always abort my games as soon as my estimated chance to win is >90% or falls below 5%)

I just hope that my first game doesn't crash, I'll worry about actually winning later.

I plan on playing on cheiftain the first time.then move up to regent after i've experienced the new features. After two or three games i'll probably move up to diety and try my luck.
