As for Beatles vs. Phil Collins, I will take that little drum thing in "In the Air Tonight" over anything the Beatles put out any day of the week.

Obviously the Beatles are better / more important etc. But Phil Collins is a better drummer than any of the Beatles.

I just saw a clip from Live Aid where Sting is singing "Every Breath You Take" while playing guitar. He is accompanied only by Phil Collins on background vocals. It is funny to see Sting wince everytime Phil hits a bad note..

I think that if the Beatles' music played today even their less-outdated stuff (i.e. the first half of the 60's stuff), they'd have only been mildly successful, but definitely no supergroup.

Of course the counterarguement is that if the Beatles existed today they would definitely not have played the same kind of music as they did 40 years ago. Would those same 4 guys have managed to be the best band in the world facing much greater competition? Who knows.

Well if the Beatles never played 40 years ago, Music might not be quite what it is today, as countless bands either cite The Beatles as an influence, or a band that does.

And their music did evolve with time, and faster than most bands around them (IMHO). They went from almost mindless pop (She loves you) to deep drug-induced lyrics and ballads and such, and some of the first hard rock.

This is really what amazes me about them. Abbey Road was released less than 7 years after Please Please Me, their first album in the UK; I can't think of any other performer band that went that far, that fast. Of course, they released 12 albums in 7 years (I'm counting the UK originals), and nobody does that anymore, either.

Put an end to popups!

The Beatles may sound outdated today, but the impact they had on popular music, their social impact, their sales and hits, and most importantly, their creativity (helped in large part by producer, George Martin) just cannot be compared the the likes of Phil Collins.

Beatles are giants of popular music, Phil Collins is a feather weight/has been.

Compare Billy Joel with Phil, or maybe Bruce Spingsteen, but The Beatles? Puhlease...

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I don't think anyone doubts here that the impact the Beatles made on music and popular culture is much larger. I just prefer Collins' music, and approach to his role as a musician, both in Genesis, and in his solo career. But this lies in the realm of personal choice, and you might as well argue about which flavour of ice cream is better.

For whatever reason you deem valid, who was better (in their prime), The Beatles, or Phil Collins(with or without Genesis)?

Four loveable moptopped scallies who produced 'The White Album' and 'Sergeant Pepper's', or a man who looks as though he's always wearing a stocking mask over his head and appears to have constipation when singing.

And of course who gave civilization 'Sussudio'...

Well, Genesis started when they ended and got it where they started.
Anyway, Paul Lennon in an interview shortly before his death admitted listening to Genesis
