The problem is that his grasp of history is... tenuous . Aside from the adding of the Canadians...

56' 40'' or fight was not a rallying cry of the War of 1812, but rather of the settlement of the Oregon Territory dispute during Polk's Administration of 1844-48 (it was never used for anything East of that). The more warlike wanted to take the whole thing up to 54' 40'', but Polk struck a deal and the Brits and Americans drew a line between the two disputed lines and formed a border. After all, Polk had more important things to deal with... like taking the entire future Southeastern US .

Thank you, Major Obvious.

The point is that Polk won an election on 54 40 or fight, but he then conveniently forgot to actually come and get us after he won.

Tis' as if the numbers 54 and 40 never existed.

ie, your Army and leadership no longer had the stomach for a good hiding after the last few go 'rounds.

Actually he won that election on Texas. He was the only candidate in the primaries or the general election who said, we should take in Texas. He knew what the Germans almost a century later didn't, you don't fight two front wars.

Though I must admit you Canadians are cute, especially since without your masters, the British, you are all talk .

Who said you're in decline? We like you big, and mean, and powerful. Who would want to crow about giving the class geek a good ass kicking?

Yes, but there's the rub, isn't it?

I mean...even if we accept the Canadian version of events as gospel, the fact remains that, in 1812, we WEREN"T "big, mean, and powerful." and thus, you have considerably less to crow about, I would think.

And the point remains that for all the threads, comments and disbaraging remarks about the US, its imminent decline, and our utter incompetence, we still manage to get a wampum lot of discussion threads started about us....far more than would be warranted if we were truly "all that."

Anyway, carry on....it's amusing and entertaining, and I brought popcorn!

Canadians are funny when their national myths are challenged. They've big claim to fame is that they've survived as a country inspite of being next door to the U.S. Generally they're such mild mannered and reasonable people, but disparage hockey, beer, or their myths about American designs on Canada and they get crazy.

Well mate,

This is the Colony that rebelled against the masters in Britain- they showed that both Monarchy and subserviant Goverment could be defeated.

At the very least, they gave us British hope during this war- they (the Yanks) sadly now portray all British as "government" and abusers of American colonists, and abuse the reality of it by doing so. Most agititors were British, not Colonial American British for good reason, yet this seems to be getting forgotten (like it was ever heard).

The Yanks helped us British by way more than they'll ever realise to give us democracy, but they are so obsessed with the British-Ameri-British war, they'll never learn about how it changed the world as they are too obsessed about the US independence aspect instead.

All:

Criticising Canadians is strange- they have been steadfast Allies of the UK and the world, and since 1850-ish, the US as well. Taking the piss out of an ally is one thing, insulting them is quite another matter.

Toby!

Heh,

Sorry all, Canadians and Yanks produce perhaps the best humour discussing each other,- I'd love a Yank/Canadian comedy night in London- I might understand why they both act as a bunch of girlies when they talk about each other.

Hi mate,

I don't believe that, In the British Isles alone we had over 80,000 miles, combine that with Germany and France alone, let alone India etc- nah, don't believe it.

You have a strange view on Germany, half a century later they are still democratic, although they were the only nation to see the Railway revolution in Britain, and, unlike the rest of the world, then design the entire railway system around getting troops to the border-fast.

What us stupid Europeans did then know's no bounds- we're alright now, I promise.

The US did indeed have more miles of track than the rest of the world combined for several decades even leading up to the first world war.

After all, we just didn't get hockey players by offering our money. We got the NHL prostrate to the "American market" and basically run the league now.
