A demo is not going to happen, at least not before release. Look at their history in that regard.

No, a demo is just a waste of time. It´s not like we´re more likely to buy the game if we get a demo. We´re all gonna buy it as soon as it hits the shelves anyway. Right?

No demo. Not neccessary and too risky, as the SMAC demo showed if my memory serves me right.

Demo are only chopped down version of the game: they are not a waste of programming time, no more than preparing a couple of trailers is an issue for movies director.

Do you ever notice a trailer that slowed down a movie to its way to the theatre?

C'mon, if you want to buy the game blinded, please do it. You don't want to check by yourself with a demo, don't want to read proper rewiews... but let us and every novice player gain a few more advice on the game that's not only paper bait from marketing, right?

SMACX demo crashed on my PC every other turn, while the original game was stable enough. I passed on that turn.

I tried some games widely defined "great", still from the demo I understand some are not my cup of tea, for many reasons. Money saved for game more fitting my gamestyle.

A demo is a *need*, nothing less, IMHO.
Every game company that doesn't let us play with a demo is stinking fear of bad press for a rushed game, at least.

A demo for a game that is already going to sell by virtue of its heritage can only do a couple of things:

+: Give Firaxis feedback on harware compatibility.
+: Hook those on the sidelines (requires great demo, of course)

-: Show that there are tons of compatability and other problems.
-: Show that the game is virtually unchanged and not worth the $

The list could go on and on, but there's too much risk for Firaxis when name value alone will sell tons of games. I think SMAC was a little different because of the new subject matter and, frankly, Brian's confidence in given you a great first 100 turns.

Anyway, too much for Firaxis to lose. Not enough to gain. I, of course, would love a demo...but we know where that's likely to lead me: to conclude it's Civ 2.7! (CyberShy, don't worry...this is all speculation)

Yin, I see your point, still others company manage to give away a demo, also when they are sure to sell lot of games: "Rome: Total War", IIRC already was a sure best seller and I've the demo installed on my PC for my son right now.

Lego Star Wars is more on a niche for younger player, still have good review, plenty of humor, a brand as Lego (TM) that really kick a$$ for children and... a nice demo.

Some companies know they have a great product and are proud to show it, some are not really sure and insist to "keep turned the light off" until it's possible.

A demo available a couple of weeks after the game launch will show a strong, great team, IMHO. Go on Sid, show your pride to us all.

I would love a downloadable demo. But it is a two-edged sword, and Firaxis has enough publicity and does not really need to stir up attention. So I doubt it will be delivered.

I downloaded the RoN demo. Thanks B. R.! I never bought the game thanks to it, since it wasn't my cup of tea.

IIRC the demo had a weak protection, so if you get the demo (intended to be limited to 100 turns) *AND* applied the first patch (dowloaded for free, of course)... voilà, you had the full game working for free.
I never tested the whole trick, as I had already bought the game (and I'd bought it anyway, as I always do with any good game I really play, after checking it with a demo, shareware or borrowing it from a friend).

Ignore Yin, he's still convinced the game hasn't changed at all from Civ3, while sensible people know it's quite different from Civ3 and very different if you compare it to Civ2 .

And sensible people know that around the New Year Yin will be posting pics of himself eating the Civ4 flavour cardboard pizza.

Anything gets cracked. Any demo that is the full game with only a time limit gets cracked. That's no news. It isn't of paramount importance, though, as people who crack these demos to be the full game would pirate the full game anyway isntead of buying it.

Even if some Firaxian installed the demo on my PC in my sleep, and made the civ icon the only clickable one I wouldn't click it. I need the real thing - when I start playing, I want to play till the end with the complete featureset.

A demo is just a demo after all, and it doesn't suit Civ.

Yes, I want a demo. I am already pre-addicted to Civ4. I would be ashamed of my gullible stance on this issue, but I would have to stop drooling in aniticipation first.

No, it would not be of any real advantage to Firaxis to issue a demo unless they were convinced that the 3-D graphics were so good they would pull in non-Civ players. I don't think even Firaxis thinks the graphics are that good.

So, the marketing will follow the path of relying on us pre-addicts and some word of mouth, etc. Personally, given the addictive nature of the game, I think Firaxis marketeers should look into the strategies of makers of tobacco, alcohol, and other such similarly addictive products. There has got to be something there they could take advantage of. [Civ billboards along the sides of NASCAR race tracks, anyone?]

Grandpa Troll: HELLO! Great to hear from you again. Yes, I've been making people mad, as usual (with a few wonderful supporters), but overall I'm taking it easy from here on in.

Adm.Naismith: You're right. A great demo *after*release (perhaps close to the time of the expansion pack) for those not sure about the game could be a good strategy.

I've found some demos very useful for assessing the quality of a game. But there's a danger in them. They are meant to be seductive, and they often leave an impression that isn't altogether accurate. I've played demos that were good and so much more was promised in the game. But upon getting the full game, I was disappointed in that there really wasn't all that much more.

I see no harm in a Civ4 demo, provided making it doesn't divert any significant resources from the completion of the full product. It would be nice to have it as a free "placeholder" until I get the full copy. But yeah, demo or not, I'm probably buying the game anyway.

I agree with you on this point. Those that will buy the game no matter what, will get it the first weeks it's out. So a demo is useless to them.

Wait till after release to make the demo, and production on the real deal is full-steam till release (not delaying those that will waste $100 on it regardless if it's a pile of steaming dog-**** or not). For those that are "lurking" in the shadows who would wait 6 months till the price dropped or for reviews (or in the case of SimGolf two months till the "classic" version came out for $20), a demo would be useful. Personally if there's a demo at least I'll be able to see if they fixed worker-diarrhea.

Same old fancentric idea: we are a part (1/3?) of the buyers of the game, but only a part, I'm afraid. No good for our ego, but reality hits our dream as a rule...

May I humbly suggest you read again one of the game preview, where a Firaxis member is interviewed?
Just consider Gamespot preview:
quote:
The idea of making Civ a lot more user-friendly is certainly one of the goals behind Civ IV, as well. "There's a certain level of detail that will always be in a Civilization game, but we want single-player to be something that's easier to jump into for people that aren't familiar with the way Civilization works," Caudill explained. Moreover, the game is getting a new user interface that's a bit unlike previous Civ games, though it's one of the last pieces of the game to be put in place, so we didn't get a chance to see it. "With Civ IV, we are acknowledging the fact that a lot of people have played real-time strategy games, and so a lot of the stuff that we've done to the interface acknowledges that," Briggs said.

Seems that a lot of new gamers must be baited to buy a different game. May be a demo can help, can't it?
