ohh, btw I finally downloaded google earth. Now how do I use it to find the elevation? You didn't expect me to read the directions did you? Actually I would if I could find them.

Google is simply amazing. How can one company be so cool, while all the other ones suck. Though it is kind of freaky seeing my truck parked in the driveway.

I must be blind then. But I did get it to show the all important bars in my neighborhood. Though it is missing one that I know of. A new village pub opened up. They are a classier chain place. The only good thing is they serve Newcaslte Brown Ale on tap and they are within walking distance...

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Your cursor has to be over the main map and you have to be at a low enough Eye Altitude to see what the elevation below the cursor is. That number is given to the right of the Lat/Lon coordinates. KH's picture shows the elevation at the red X to be 2m.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Ex: Danny's Bar is about 1800ft, Hammerhead's is around 1716ft, and Pt's is around 1722ft. Google Earth's placemarks aren't exactly correct in their placement, so you'll have to figure out what building is where to figure its elevation.

I still can't get the elevation thing to work. I feel really stupid. Maybe you need the plus version. Or maybe it's just a quirk with my computer.

Hmm, try zooming in as close as you can get. If you see the elevation given (again, have your cursor hovering somewhere over the main map area, not the little corner map you can enable from the View menu) inside the text box at the bottom of the map between the Lat/Lon coordinates and the Streaming bar, start slowly zooming back out and check for the elevation again. There is no reason you shouldn't be seeing the elevation in the free version, which is what we're all using I presume, so it's really odd you're having this problem.

Click on the "terrain" layer. If it's off then no altitude information will be displayed.

See on the bottom left, where there are 6 checkboxes - directly under the compass, still under the picture not in the sidebar? One of them says "Terrain" ... check it
