Thanks so much for the reviews! I'm going to read them right now!

my 2mp nikon creates 1mb files at full resolution (1600x1200)
not sure what kind of files a 4mp would create, but supposing it would be twice a 2mp, you could store 200 photos in a 512mb card

Not really. Digital photos tend to be a lot harsher than analog, while high quality analog can be zoomed a lot more than digital can.

I don't use cell phones (except my work phone), so why should I waste money buying a phone I will never use just to get a camera?

That's alright Dis ( )

Couple more questions if anyone feels like answering them

There's also the Sony Cybershot
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005...s/sony_s40.html

I noticed some things. Digital cameras can take video. Some can take it with sound, others not.
The Nikon can't take video with sound.
The Sony can and it's even cheaper.

However, there's this thing called "makro" from what I've seen. It measures how close a camera can focus if I'm not mistaken.

The Nikon has a makro of 4 cm which is great I think.

The Sony however has a makro of 12 cm. Is that a problem? For example could I photograph a printed page with the Sony?

Also I noticed another difference.

The Nikon stores the video in quictime mov format.
The Sony in MPEG format.

I think the MPEG is the one compatible with most DVD players?

Thanks again

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I'd check into Canons. I have an older Canon Powershot, and it does 640x480 AVIs w/Sound and it's a quality camera. Just my 2 cents.

Timexwatch I checked some Canon PowerShots after I read your post. They don't have the Sony makro limitation, which is cool. They can focus to 5 cm which is great. However, concerning the video it says that it has video with sound for 3 minutes. Does that mean that the 3 minutes is the maximum allowed period to shoot a video?

It depends. The length of one clip depends on the resolution. If I do 640x480, it does a 30 second clip. Lower resolution clips can go on longer.

BUT

How much video you can take depends on the size of your memory card. The worst that happens for me is that I wait 2 seconds and hit the video button again. I'd like it to take longer clips at higher resolution, but I guess it's probably a limitation of the hardware on the camera.

That's the difference between film and CCD. More precisely it has something to do with colour depth AFAIK.

A couple of important things to consider when buying a digital camera:

Shutter lag-time meaning the time between when you push the shutter release and when the camera takes the picture. Some digital cameras have annoying long lag times.

Focus time: how quickly can the camera re-focus on a new subject. This is important when taking pics of moving things.

Macro: don't worry about it. If you want to take a pic of something small, then you set the resolution to high. Then you can zoom to the object after downloading the pic.

I've got the Canon ixus 400. Excellent camera.

Ok, here's my input...

Megapixels are not everything. You can have 4 megapixel and a crappy objective (like the ones used in mobile phones) and get a lousy picture.
If you plan on developing plain 9x13 or 10x15 cm pictures, 2 megapix is enough, if you have a decent objective- and again- the mobile phone ones dont.
I would always go for a digital camera, rather than a mobile phone camera.

Movies. I have a Canon I1 IS and it shoots 640x400 30fps with no time limit (except the size of the memory card of course...

yeah, you could look at a camera with sound recording abilities as well, plus no time limit and you would also have a half-decent videocamera

Guys thanks for all the extra info

I have my eyes on Nikon CoolPix 5600. It's 299 euros and they give you the little bag and a tripod for free. Anyway, it's like the Nikon 4600 but this one is 5,1 mp and has continuous video with sound. I figure I might as well pay the extra and have everything.

However, I notice it records the clips on Quicktime MOV. Which is ok since I think it's better than MPEG. However I wonder if that will play on a DVD player. I probably would have to convert it to MPEG to play to the DVD and maybe there's some quality loss from the conversion...

In the review I read however that it takes 6 seconds for the flash to reload and during that time the LCD screen goes blank. I don't know wether that would be a nuissance.

you could use Nero and procude a real dvd with menus and stuff

it's really easy, i converted 10 vcd's to mpeg and then to dvd for a friend...

Mark I know it's easy (I have written audio CDs) However I'd have to convert the QuickTime movie files to something that can be played by a DVD (a mpeg?). I'm wondering if there could be a quality loss because of this conversion
Other camers record immedieatly in MPEG format, so that's why I'm asking

I'm pretty set for Nikon 5600... found it for 279 euros. +50 the 512 SD card+ 8 for the little bag to put it in. 340 euros and I'm set.

Ok thanks to all of you for your help it's been really very helpful. And to MarkG for providing the reviews etc.

Now there's only one thing that bugs me. It's so incredibly small!!!! But almost all are. And the screen is pretty small at 1,8. But whatcanyoudo. I guess it's a matter of getting used to it.

You don't get quality loss converting digital image to digital image in the same way you get it converting analog to digital.

So converting video from mov won't alter the quality unless you use some sort of compression.
